Match Report of the Gloucester V Bath Game Played on 2

THE CITIZEN TUESDAY, APRIL 30, 1963 GLOUCESTER BEATEN BY LATE SCORE EXETER 5PTS., GLOUCESTER 3PTS. In a tedious match which hardly befitted what should have been a festive conclusion to the season, Exeter, somewhat unjustly scored in the last minute to beat Gloucester by a goal to a try at Exeter last night. Gloucester, who have done well on their tour of the West Country, did not deserve to have their record spoilt in this fashion. The whole match provided nothing but anticlimax for both players and spectators. The proceedings were marred by some indifferent kicking in which all the backs indulged. The same staleness and lethargy was also noticeable in the forward play. Exeter might, perhaps, make the excuse that they have lacked half-a-dozen leading players in the last fortnight, because of a crop of injuries. As for Gloucester, they were yards faster on the loose ball, and a few of the best moves in this disappointing encounter came from the work of their half-backs, Mickey Booth and Gary Mace. Booth, when he did not kick towards touch, ran intelligently, while Mace showed he had a keen eye for an opening. In the centre John Bayliss and Peter Hawker tackled furiously, but did little else. EXHORTATIONS England blind side wing-forward, Dick Manley, urged his forwards on, but not even his exhortations produced any results. Exeter were sadly out-scrummaged in the set pieces. The second half dragged on until at last Gary White surged through, taking the ball at his feet for 20 yards, and gathering it, to pass out to Timms. He slipped it back and White gave it to Peter Ford, a Gloucester veteran ‒ who dashed round on the blind side and scored by the corner flag, deceiving everyone. Exeter, in a last enthusiastic burst, pushed Gloucester back. A quick heel followed in a scrum 15 yards from the Gloucester line, and Peter Woolley kicked over the heads of the advancing defenders for winger Tony Vinniconde to gather on the bounce and slip through for a well contrived try. Full back Bob White then landed the decisive conversion. TEAMS Exeter: R. White; A. L. Vinniconde, D. R. Atkins, R. Pugsley, R. Sleigh; P. Woolley, K. A. Hopper; D. Harris, M. Cook, M. Faulkner, P.
