Stripping back some of the layers and length of 2013s gorgeously textured Wakin On a Pretty Daze, B'lieve I'm Goin Down. chronicles the low-key but disarmingly funny inner monologue of a seemingly ordinary dude-half Neil Young and half Winnie the Pooh. Kurt Vile scored a genuine word-of-mouth hit with his fifth album, Wakin on a Pretty Daze, its elongated rambles conjuring hazy half-memories of Laurel Canyon while feeling uniquely situated to modern confines. Electric guitars aren't entirely absent but they're used for coloring -- arriving unexpectedly as a wash of distortion or perhaps a bit of percussion -- on a record anchored by acoustic guitars and banjos. Such instruments may suggest B'lieve I'm Goin Down. is an exercise in introspection, another exposed nerve from a sensitive singer/songwriter, but Vile often favors feel over form, so this unfolds with the logic of a dream, details falling into a place so subtly they're felt, not heard. Often, B'lieve seems simple, rolling along with fingerpicked rhythms or barroom piano, and while it's certainly emotionally direct -- and, occasionally, musically direct too, nowhere more so than on the opening sequence of "Pretty Pimpin," "I'm an Outlaw," and "Dust Bunnies," a trilogy of precision that eases into a shifting stoned daydream -- B'lieve I'm Goin Down. is an impeccably arranged album beneath its soothing, sleepy surface, with every element assisting in an illusion of deep, shimmering, and alluring melancholy. Phili singer-songwriter Kurt Vile has hammered out an impressive discography of work over the decades. After decamping from neo-psychedelic band ‘The War on Drugs’ in 2008, he released his first solo record ‘Constant Hitmaker’, a collection of lo-fi home recordings he’d contrived over the years. Heavily influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Sonic Youth and Tom Petty, Vile’s sound has evolved from his earlier reverb drenched, lo-fi distortion to his more recent guitar-driven meandering rock. A prolific songwriter whose lyrics are equally as tragic as they are absurd and humorous, Kurt Vile is one of the only artists that has the capacity to break your heart and make you burst out laughing all in the same verse. His hazy talk-singin’ style of telling stories will have you feeling too many emotions at once before choking you out with a statement like ‘girl you gave me rabies, and I don’t mean maybe’. Kurt released his sixth solo album ‘b’lieve im goin down’ in 2015 and it’s by far my favourite of his records. Weightless, liberating and full of funky folkiness, Kurt lays off the acoustic guitar a touch and incorporates a little more banjo and piano this time round. Vile mentions in interviews how he always wanted a guitar when he was little but he was gifted a banjo instead, so his solution was to just pick it up and start playing it like a guitar, nurturing his completely unique and recognizable approach to finger picking. He didn’t have a producer around for most of the time he wrote this album so he really managed to get his personality in there.
