FAMILY CUCUJIDAE (Flat bark beetles) Y. Bousquet The cucujids currently include 30 species in Canada and Alaska. The adults are usually found under the bark of dead trees, in logs and decaying plant matter. Some species apparently feed on fungi and decaying matter, others prey on insects. Six of the species occurring in Canada, Cryptolestes ferrugineus, C. pusillus, C. turcicus, Ahasverus advena, Oryzaephilus surinamensis and O. mercator are associated with stored products; four of them are among the most serious pests in the country. Lawrence's concept (1982a) of the family is followed here. Many authors rank the Silvaninae as a distinct family. There is no modern taxonomic revision of the Cucujidae but a number of genera have recently been revised by Halstead and Thomas.
