Are you sometimes afraid to ride a ride for the first time? Part of the fun of riding a JOYLAND ride is the excitement and even a bit of fear that you feel. Which rides do you fear? Why? How does this affect your body? What can you do to control your fears? 1. Name a ride that you are afraid of: _______________________________ 2. Which of these symptoms do you feel when you ride the ride, or think about riding the ride? ________ Dry mouth ________ Sweaty hands ________ Cold hands and feet ________ Trembling ________ Big eye pupils ________ Fast breathing ________ Stomach butterflies ________ Pounding heartbeat ________ Tense muscles 5 © Joyland Amusement Park. All Rights Reserved. 3. Now try to cure your fear by trying one of these methods. Check the one that made you feel less tense: ________ Identify what seems to cause your fear (like seeing the Dare Devil Drop). Try to think of something besides your fear when you see the ride (like looking at the beautiful birds in the sky). ________ Relax. Take a deep breath. Hold it for 7 seconds. Release the air slowly while thinking about something pleasant. Think about relaxing your muscles as you breathe. ________ Gradually build up to the feared event (like riding the Log Ride or X-Factor before the Dare Devil Drop) ________ Force yourself to feel the fear again and again until you’re much less afraid (like riding the Sandstorm over and over again until you are much less afraid). ________ Ignore the fear by keeping your mind busy with other thoughts (like watching the motion and forces on the roller coaster instead of thinking about the feelings you might have). 4. Match the different types of fears that a person might feel when riding at JOYLAND: a. Claustrophobia (confined spaces) ________ Drop Tower b. Demophobia (crowds) ________ Musik Express c. Barophobia (gravity) ________ Entrance Gate d. Acrophobia (heights) ________ Sky Ride e. Tachyphobia (high speeds) ________ Vortex f. Phonophobia (sounds) ________ Carousel g. Roundaphobia (circular rides) ________ Galaxi If you are afraid of a ride, you are not alone. Most people, however, find that once they ride a ride that they have been afraid of, they are no longer afraid of it…in fact, they are often surprised by how much fun it is! 6 © Joyland Amusement Park.
