Prepare standard stonemasonry components Reference : J/504/8215 Level : Level 2 Credit Value : 8 Guided Learning Hours : 64 Aim : The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to: - prepare standard stonemasonry components - prepare, shape and apply surface finishes to standard stonemasonry components Learning Outcomes Assessment Criteria The Learner Will The Learner Can 1 Know how to measure and set out the work. 1.1. - Describe the different information sources used in stonemasonry. - Information could include: - specific drawings, specifications, schedules, risk assessments, method statements. 1.2. - Describe the purpose of the information sources. 1.3. - Describe the reason for identifying the natural bedding plane. 1.4. - Describe the different tools used for measuring and marking out the work. - Tools including: - setting out tools, measuring tools, marking tools, cutting tools, squares, pencils, scriber. 1.5. - Describe the appropriate method of boning in to produce surface out of twist. 2 Be able to measure and set out the work. 2.1. - Identify and position the natural bedding plane in relation to the component positions structures. 2.2. - Perform checks to ensure that the resources required for the work meet quality standards. - Resources including: - natural stone quarried block, sawn six sides, standard worked components and slab in various types (quarried block, thin slab). Quality checks including: - damage, defects, square, straight, vents, shakes, out of twist and dimension 2.3. - Identify surfaces for the application of finishes in accordance with the given specification. 2.4. - Mark out the work from the datum prior to commencing cutting operations. 2.5. - Apply standard identification marks to completed components. 2.6. - Calculate lifting requirements prior to lifting the block. - Calculations including: - quantities, linear measurement, area, volume, density, mass. 3 Know how to prepare and shape the stone. 3.1. - Describe the personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for preparing stonemasonry components. - Personal protective equipment including: - helmet, ear defenders, overalls, safety footwear, high visibility jacket, eye protection, hand protection. 3.2. - Describe the methods of transporting a range of resources. - Resources including: - natural stone quarried block, sawn six sides, standard worked Page 1 of 3 nocn.org.uk [email protected] 0300 999 1177 components and slab in various types (quarried block, thin slab). 3.3. - Describe the different types of fixing provision. - Fixing provision including: - joggles, holes, slots, lewis holes. 3.4. - Describe the importance of protecting completed resources and the surrounding area. - Including: against damage from general workplace activities, other occupations and adverse weather conditions. 3.5. - Describe the use of boning blocks to produce flat surfaces. 3.6. - Describe the sequence of tools used to process stone components. - Tools for: - pitching, punching, clawing, chiselling, dragging, rebate, checks. 3.7. - Describe appropriate applications of a range of surface types. - Surface areas including: - face, side face, soffit, beds, joints, arris, sawn back/wall back, joint back. 4 Be able to prepare and shape the stone. 4.1. - Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when preparing stonemasonry components. - Personal protective equipment including: - helmet, ear defenders, overalls, safety footwear, high visibility jacket, eye protection, hand protection. 4.2. - Select the appropriate equipment to lift and transport resources. - Equipment including: - manual pallet truck, sack barrow, pallets. 4.3. - Provide fixing provisions to stones as required. - Fixing provisions including: - joggles, holes, slots, lewis holes. 4.4. - Protect the work and its surrounding area from damage. - Including: maintaining a clean work space, disposal of waste. 4.5. - Bone in the line prior to coping in accordance with given instructions. 4.6. - Set up and use hand tools and equipment to carry out the task in an appropriate manner. - Tools including: - hand tools, portable power tools, static power tools and other relevant equipment. 4.7. - Cope and split quarry blocks in accordance with the given instructions. 4.8. - Produce checks and rebates in accordance with the given specification. 4.9. - Produce surfaces square and out of twist in accordance with the given specification. 4.10. - Store and protect completed resources in an appropriate manner. - Resources including: - natural stone quarried block, sawn six sides, standard worked components and slab in various types (quarried block, thin slab). 5 Know how to apply surface finishes. 5.1. - Describe the different types of natural stones. - Stones including: Page 2 of 3 nocn.org.uk [email protected] 0300 999 1177 - sandstone, limestone, marble, slate, granite. 5.2. - Describe different types of remedial work that may be required. 5.3. - Describe the different types of standard tools used to apply surface finishes. - Tools including: - masonry tools, carving tools, lettering tools, marking out tools, coping tools, splitting tools. 5.4. - Describe the classification of a range of rocks. - Rocks including: - igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic. 5.5. - Describe a range of specialist surface finishes. - Finishes including: - furrowed, punched, broached, reticulated, vermiculated, bush hammered, dolly pointed, riven, fine honed, polished, flame textured. 5.6. - Describe appropriate methods of checking the accuracy of worked stones. - Methods including: - square, straight edge, measurements, specification, job card. 6 Be able to apply surface finishes. 6.1. - Use relevant hand and power tools to produce a range of surface finishes to components in accordance with the given specification. - Surface finishes including: - boasted/bolstered, batted/tooled, pitched/rock faced, picked/pecked, rubbed/honed, dragged. 6.2. - Maintain and sharpen hand tools in accordance with manufacturers' instructions. Assessment guidance and/or requirements : This unit will be achieved in accordance with the additional guidance requirements as set out by the Awarding Organisation.
