CORRECTIONAL CORPORAL County of Calaveras Range: 10405 / Non-Exempt DEFINITION: Under direction to supervise train and assist jail personnel on an assigned shift; to guard and supervise prisoners in the County Jail Facility; to act as; Facility Supervisor in absence of Sergeants; to do related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS. The Corporal classification is a journey level position in the Correctional Officer series. The Corporal classification is distinguished from the Correctional Officer classification in that the Corporal is expected to have a thorough understanding of jail operations, be able to provide functional supervision for a given shift as assigned and provide training to staff on an assigned shift. The Corporal, unlike the advanced level Correctional Sergeant classification is not expected to provide written performance evaluations of staff, nor be responsible for disciplinary actions. In accordance with the law, the Correctional Corporal may be staffed by either a female or a male incumbent and will perform the same general duties with the exception that California State law requires that female corporals will work with female prisoners as well as with male prisoners; male Corporals will normally work with the male population EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Directs, supervises and trains shift personnel as assigned. Completes daily observation reports (DOR’s) for trainees. Implements training procedures as required; assists with identifying training needs. Receives, books, fingerprints, photographs and assigns prisoners to cells. Maintains security watch of prisoners at all times. Prepares required records pertaining to period of commitment. Receives and records personal property taken into custody; prepares records and reports, completes forms. Handles documents related to release or transfer of prisoners. Recommends work assignments for prisoners. Answers inquiries over the telephone and at the counter related to jail policies and individual prisoners in accord with applicable regulations. Receives and gives receipts for bail money; dispenses prescribed medications to prisoners. Supervises inmate workers in performance of routine custodial work. Supervises feeding of prisoners; assists with routine clerical duties. Ensures that staff is following established jail procedures and meeting goals. 1 | P a g e CORRECTIONAL CORPORAL County of Calaveras Range: 10405 / Non-Exempt Serves as Officer in Charge (O.I.C) for assigned shift. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of an appropriate California driver’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles is required. In accordance with agency policy, incumbents must have completed a Jail Operations Training Course as prescribed by California Administrative Code, Title 15, Section 1020, Minimum Jail Standards; incumbents must possess a valid advanced First Aid Card and C.P.R. Certification. Incumbents, in accordance with agency policy, must successfully complete a SIC supervisory training course and STC Training Officers course. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Laws, rules and regulations pertaining to jail operations, jail security measures, and jail operational procedures; court procedures; principles and techniques of supervision and training; general personnel management practices. Ability to: Demonstrate an aptitude for supervising and training Correctional personnel assigned to a shift; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; understand and apply operational policies as appropriate; enforce procedures and rules; handle general day-to-day operational demands. Skill to: Supervise and train Correctional personnel assigned to a particular shift; understand and carry out oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; identify, implement and coordinate training practices per departmental policy. Training and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school and one year (1) professional experience as a Correctional Officer or in a similar Law Enforcement position. 2 | P a g e CORRECTIONAL CORPORAL County of Calaveras Range: 10405 / Non-Exempt PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequently stand, walk and climb stairs and ladders; sit for extended periods in one position; walk on sloped, slippery and/or uneven surfaces; ability to stoop, kneel, or bend to pick up or move objects weighing over 100 pounds with help; crawl through various areas moving on hands and knees; physical ability to restrain prisoners; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range, verbal communication; use of office equipment including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers, and FAX.
