MISSIONARY SOCIETY OF ST PAUL—AUSTRALIAN PROVINCE We thank Fr Ivano Burdian mssp for his service, ministry and support that he has provided us over the years as the Provincial of the MSSP’s in Australia. He will be moving to the Canadian Province to continue his work with the MSSP’s. We welcome Fr John Taliana mssp, as the new Provincial for the MSSP’s in Australia. Fr John, along with Fr Lonnie Borg mssp and Fr Jude Pirotta mssp, make up the leadership team for the MSSP’s. Fr Ivan has this message for us: My dear brothers and sisters of St James, As I get ready for my departure for Canada, once again I wish to thank-you for the spirit of welcome, with Fr. Jude, you have nurtured over these years. I have always felt part of the “family”. It has been a privilege to be able to walk with you in our Journey of faith. I can assure you that my own faith has been nurtured by the experience. As I take my next step in the mission I have been invited to embrace please pray for me as I pray you will continue to embrace yours, as individuals, families and as a community. Remembering that we are empowered by the Spirit given to us in our baptism. If you are in Toronto please look, Fr. Mario and I up. Until next time, take care and God bless, your brother, Fr. Ivano. Fr John writes to us: Dear Paulist Missionary friends Fr Jude, Fr John and Fr Lonnie A few months ago, Fr Mark Grima, Superior General of the Paulist Missionaries, shared with me that after consultation with our members in Australia, he would like me to accept the ministry of Provincial leader in our Australian region. After a time of praying and discernment I accepted and chose to start this ministry on the 8th of May, feast of Our Lady of Pompeii. For us Paulist Missionaries this is an important feast marking the day when, in 1887, our founder Joseph De Piro, while praying to Our Lady, decided to leave his Law studies and start studying for the priesthood. I arrived in Australia as a Paulist seminarian in 1974, when Fr Jude was still discerning his vocation, and was ordained a priest in December 1978. My first assignment was as assistant priest in the parish of St Joachim’s Victoria Park, WA, where I spent five years. During my forty years of priesthood I have also ministered in different parishes and places in Victoria and NSW. I have encountered people from different beliefs, languages and cultures, and my life has been greatly enriched by the people I ministered to. I am no stranger to you parishioners at St James, I have often visited you and shared in your celebrations. I feel very blessed by the community of St James and your support and welcome to many Paulist Missionaries. I am pleased to see so many lay people getting involved in the life of our Missionary Society. Although small in number, Paulist Missionaries continue to offer our ministry within the Melbourne Church, where we first arrived in 1948. Thank you; you are an important part of our mission. I hope to be able to visit you soon. Fr John .
