NWE Making an Impact Thematic Workshop Innovating in Waste Water Treatment

NWE Making an Impact Thematic Workshop Innovating in waste water treatment Nicole Skirde (Contact Point Luxembourg) Matt Thompson (Joint Secretariat) Elisabeth Wauschkuhn (Contact Point Germany) Introduction • Introduction to the session • Call for capitalisation • Achieving and sustaining results • Roundtable discussion and feedback Main Objectives • Objective is to let participants network, discuss call for cap ideas, but also to get input for the future programming period • Making sure projects have an impact beyond their closure • Presenting the call for capitalisation • Offering networking opportunities and creating synergies between projects • Identify opportunities for the future programming period Call for capitalisation Conditions • The current call for proposals is open until 10 January 2020 to projects approved in calls 1 to 4. • A second call for capitalisation will be organised at the end of 2020 for projects approved in calls 5 to 9, as well as the targeted call on renewable energy. • Duration (maximum for both calls): until 31 December 2023 Call for capitalisation Rationale • Capitalisation initiatives should : - Stem form well performing projects with solid results to showcase - Build on existing project results that have strong potential for further uptake, roll-out and dissemination - Go beyond what the project initially aimed for (creating synergies, supporting unforeseen benefits, rolling-out results to new areas, stakeholders, sectors….) - Contribute to reducing territorial disparities by rolling- out or supporting further uptake of results Call for capitalisation Type of initiatives expected Project results can be developed in new geographical areas within NWE e.g. a project has successfully implemented energy retrofitting solutions in the private housing sector in Germany, the Netherlands and France and will now propose to replicate it to other NWE countries, specifically targeting less developed regions or deprived urban areas. e.g. a project has successfully implemented urban energy transformation measures and would now like to apply the method in small towns or rural areas in NWE considering their specific needs. Call for capitalisation Type of initiatives expected Project results can be developed in new economic sector e.g. a project has developed a coating technology for the space industry which can be used in a new design for the drone sector as well. e.g. a project focusing on the use of algae for energy also identified unforeseen market opportunities for algae in pharma, food, feed, cosmetics and more. The capitalisation initiative will now be delivering on some of these opportunities. Call for capitalisation Type of initiatives expected Project results can be developed towards new type of target group/ type of stakeholders e.g. a project has successfully implemented a social innovation process to enhance access to employment for NEETS and will propose to address a new target audience which has a specific relevance on the NWE territory. e.g. a project has successfully implemented energy retrofitting solutions in the private housing sector and would now propose to extend it to the social housing sector. Call for capitalisation Assessment criteria 7 assessment criteria : • Eligibility • Context • Objective • Territorial relevance • Partnership and cooperation • Value for money • Results Call for capitalisation Budget • 4.5M ERDF ring fenced for each call. • The maximum ERDF grant rate for partners is 60% of the total capitalisation project budget. • Existing partners will keep the same grant rate as in the initial approved application. Call for capitalisation – Partnership • Existing project partnerships can be adapted or modified • Not all partners need to be on board, new partners can join • LP should remain the same, but WP leader can be another organisation • More info in ToR and in addendum Call for capitalisation – Application and assessment process • Submission by email – please read the PM addendum for details. • For approved AFs, the capitalisation initiative is added in the eMS to the initial project as a new work package Call for capitalisation 6 key points for applicants • Follow the guidance in the ToR – everything is there! • Build on a successful project result and focus your cap. initiative on how to roll it out / support its uptake. • Keep in mind the territorial aspect : what territories to involve and why? How does it contribute to reducing disparities? • Be sure to have the right partners on board, and that all partners have an active and useful role. • Do not duplicate project LTEs • Get in contact with CPs! Call for capitalisation – Timeline 10 Jan. 2020 (12:00 noon): closure of call 1 followed by JS assessment. 12 Feb 2020: Decision at MC18 End of 2020: Call 2 opening Achieving and sustaining results Project examples • Phos4You • Water Test Network • WOW! Progress to Date Trial example WTN_SWH_04 (picture of 500L photobioreactor) Phosphorous removal from primary settled effluent using microalgae. Total trial duration 17 weeks. WTN_SWH_11 (bio-reactor filled with the biocatalyst) Providing consistently high removal rates for TBOD and ammonia in primary settled influent using novel biocatalytic composites (biocatalysts) that intensify biological processes. Total trial duration 20 weeks. Innovation Challenges • Problems experienced by Water Users (public utilities, large industries) to which a solution is sought from innovative SMEs. • Engaging SMEs in a 'meet the buyer' type exercise, where challenges will be promoted amongst SMEs First Challenge was on improving Sludge processing • Closed May 2019 • 5 applications • Winner joined us at Aquatech Second Challenge is on pharmaceutical detection & removal • Closing 1 February 2020 Three more Challenges within the project lifetime, approx. every 6 months Project Challenges • An imbalance in applications across partner countries • Lead time to bring technologies into testing can be long • Some SMEs required significant support to produce testing plans • Has been some delay in building one of the testing facilities In the future; • Will SMEs pay for this service or will other funding options be needed • How will we ensure meaningful contribution by those joining the Network Thank you
