This year, we are excited to explore Why Foreign Policy Matters, through political, economic, and cultural lenses. We hear the term “foreign policy” every day, but rarely take the time to explore how it impacts our everyday lives, including our safety and security, financial stability, and health and well-being. Today, we have brought together distinguished speakers from the government, business, finance, and media sectors to provide their perspectives on the impact of foreign policy, as well as their unique insights on leadership in a dynamic and competitive global market. Through this cross-sector approach, we hope to better understand some of the serious issues which are facing the world today, and provide you, our valued audience, with deeper insights into how to gain and maintain success on an international scale. The findings of theGallup Global Report: Where The Great Jobs Are will set the stage for today’s discussions. Developed by Gallup, this report offers a first look at the real jobs situation in 138 countries, revealing where the good – and great – jobs are, and where the greatest deficits remain. Unlike other surveys that use indicators such as GDP, household income, and unemployment data to make predictions about countries, this unique survey captures how people “feel” about their job situation and their future. We are extremely grateful to our lead Sponsor Coca-Cola for their generous support of this Summit. Thanks also to the U.S. Department of State, Albright Stonebridge, and Financial Times, as well as our partners Gallup and the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, who have been instrumental in the success of the Summit. We also extend our gratitude to the many other corporate, government, and diplomatic leaders who have lent their generous support to Meridian’s mission. Finally, our heartfelt thanks to you - our guests. Your role in the success of today’s Summit is immeasurable. We truly hope that today’s discussion will further enhance your understanding of the world, and that you will learn new information to assist in resolving your own leadership challenges. Sincerely, Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez Ambassador Stuart W. Holliday Chairman President and CEO 6 SUMMIT SPEAKERS THE HONORABLE ANTONY J.
