FROM LORT 7 AUGUST 1776 171 Dr Maty12 being dead, his son,13 who is chaplain to Lord Stormont,1* is expected over, and as I was to rely upon him for protection and direction, I therefore have for the present suspended my going thither, but if he returns thither bef<ore> the middle of September, I hope yet to accompany him. In the meantime I shall go northward this hot weather and visit Chatsworth and Hardwicke.1* I remain, Sir, Your faithful servant, M. LORT Although there is a gap of almost two years in the correspondence, Lort's letters to Cole occasionally mention HW. On 14 June iyyy Lort wrote: 'This gent[leman] [HW] desired I would inquire at Cambridge for a clergyman who would live in the house with Lord Ofrford] and I wrote to that purpose, but I find he has engaged some person,1 though I know not who it is' (Add. MS 5993, foi. 26). On 8 April 1778: 'I saw Mr H. Walpole yesterday, and was sorry to find that paltry worldly business took off his attention to literary pursuits, which he told me of with much concern. He triumphs over the poor Dean [Milles], upon finding his notions of Chatter­ ton's forgeries being confirmed by the peremptory decision of Mr Wharton [Thomas Warton] in his book just published. Yet Wharton I think has not discussed the matter so fully as he might have done. What says my master Glynne2 to this decision ex cathedra—-for such many people will think Pro­ fessor Wharton's to be. For my part, I cannot yet make up my mind' (Add. MS 5993, foi. 33-4; Cole's copy, Add. MS 5825, foi. 156V, 157V). Again he wrote, 1 May iyy8: 'Mr H. W. is not pleased with finding a curious paper given by Lord Hardwicke in his State Papers as an original never before exhibited, which Mr W. had printed in his Ric[hard] III. It is an order of the King's, relative to one of the sheriffs of London proposing to marry Jane Shore' (Add. MS 5993, foi. 35-6; Cole's copy, Add. MS 5825, foi. 156V). 12.
