Area, Houses and Population. The figures contained in this table are for the whole of Burma exclusive of the Trans- Salween Northern Shan States and the State of West Mang Lon, which were omitted from the operations. They include the returns for Synchronous and non-Synchronous areas and for the estimated areas in the Northern Shan States, the Pakokku Chin Hills, and the Upper Chind- win, Bhamo and Myitkyina districts. The table also comprises the estimated figures for Karennv, the component parts of which are hardly "States" in the ordinary acceptation of the term. — CENSUS. Imperial Table No. I. Area CENSUS. Houses an IMPERIAL TABLE No. II. Variation in Population since 1872. No census was taken in Uppeir Burma prior to 1891. After the annexation of Upper Purma the townships of Minhla, Taingda and Sinbaungwe were added to the Thayetmyo district froni the newly annexed territory, hence the large increase in Thayetmyo between been amalgamated with the 188 1 and 1891 in the Thayetmyo district. Taingda has since Minhla township. The population given for the years 1891, 1881 and 1872 for all other districts has been adjusted as closely as the available information will aillow to represent the increase ar decrease within the district areas as constituted on the ist March 1901. CENSUS. Imperial Table No. \L—-Variation CENSUS. in Population since iS'j2. Net variation in period 1872 to igoi. Increase (+) or decrease (— ). IMPERIAL TABLE No. III. Towns and Villages classified by population. Each of the " villages" referred to in Column 2 is a " hamlet," i.e., the smallest collec- tion of buildings known by a separate name, not the charge of any separate rural official. This wider definition, combined with the extension of the Census area, accounts for the large increase of villages (28,719 to 60,395) during the ten years 1891 — 1901. lO CENSUS.
