In Israelite journey through the book of Exodus is the Sam Fox on his story of the formation of a nation. In the first book of the Torah, Bar Mitzvah (Heritage we read stories of our ancestral families; narratives grounded in the Sanctuary) machinations of individuals, their relationships and their familial connections. With the book of Exodus, the emphasis shifts. No CANDLE LIGHTING Friday 7:14pm longer are we concerned with just one small group of people, instead Saturday 7:49pm we are focused on hundreds of thousands as they leave slavery and TORAH (page 552) form themselves into a nation, a people who share a history and a Exodus 35:1 - 38:20 new destiny. Through their time in the desert they make a covenant Exodus 30:11 - 30:16 with God, they connect with one another and they face challenges HAFTARAH (page 1276) and tribulations together as one. And one of the symbols of the new II Kings 12:1 - 12:17 togetherness, the shared future, is the construction of the tabernacle. SHABBAT SERVICES Through its building, the people brought their individual selves Erev Shabbat together, with hearts filled with love they gave and participated in its construction and through that process, created the space for God • 6:15pm Shabbat Live (New Sanctuary) within the community. The people are told: “create the mishkan, craft a holy place and I, God, will dwell amongst you.” It is only • 6:15pm - Masorti when they work together as a community, bring blessings from their service (Neuweg) hearts, that God’s presence is felt. Shabbat Morning Interestingly, the miskhan, the sacred space the Israelites built for • 9:00am - God to inhabit was more than four walls permanently grounded Masorti service in a piece of land. It was a portable structure which moved with (New Sanctuary) them; it was a part of the world but also a reminder that God is not • 10:00am - constrained to a place. Although they met God in the mishkan, Progressive service (Heritage Sanctuary) God was within but also around. And in the same way, we can meet _________________ God in all manner of places, it does not have to be in a sanctuary. God, holiness, encounters with the sacred happen in moments Morning minyan is on when community comes together with shared purpose, with love, Monday and Thursdays at 6:45am open hearts.
