La Jolla Country Day School

La Jolla Country Day School 2019 Torrey Football Team Handbook 1 Torrey Football Mission Statement: Perseverance, Accountability, Integrity, and Enthusiasm are the Roots of Torrey Pride and the Torrey Football Program. Torrey football players are expected to carry on Country Day’s rich traditions by enthusiastically striving for excellence in meeting the high standards that Torrey Pride demands. The ultimate goal of the Torrey Football Program is to guide tomorrow’s leaders, through the game of football, to become loving men who pride themselves on their Perseverance, Accountability, Integrity, and Enthusiasm. Torrey Football coaches lead by example in demanding that each player is accountable, perseveres through adversity, and handles himself with integrity at all times. While each coach demonstrates his passion for football on a daily basis, it is his love of working with and teaching young men that drives his desire and enthusiasm to coach at La Jolla Country Day. We teach and stress the idea of No P.A.I.N., No Gain. In order to gain in life and on the field, players will battle adversity. Without P.A.I.N., players will not reach their full potential. Torrey football players are committed to a cause bigger than themselves. 2) Until now, because of their age, players have been mostly takers. They will learn to be givers through the Torrey Football program. They will give back to their coaches, their teammates, their school, and their community. 3) It is the primary goal of the coaching staff to foster growth, both as a football player and more importantly as a young man, in each player. All team rules have been devised and each practice is planned for the purpose of reaching this goal. 4) It is the secondary goal of the Torrey Football Program to win as many games as possible, win our league championship, and to win the CIFSDS championship. 5) It is a privilege to be a member of the Torrey football program, not a right. Every member of the program (players, managers, trainer, and coaches) is expected to earn that privilege every day of the season and during the summer preseason preparation period. 6) The football program operates on Torrey Time. If you are on time you are late. Arrive early and be prepared. In other words, for a practice scheduled at 10:00 AM you should arrive no later than 9:45. At 10:00 you will be completely dressed, loosened and warmed up and ready to work. “What you can vividly imagine, Ardently desire, Sincerely believe, And enthusiastically act upon… Must inevitably come to pass.”- Paul J. The summer is a valuable opportunity for our players to improve their strength, speed, and quickness as well as to refine their football skills. The summer is also an extremely important time for our young men to foster a strong team concept by spending time and working together. All Torrey football summer practices, competitions, and workouts are designed to build better Country Day young men and a better Torrey football team. “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” -Aristotle Time Conflicts The Torrey football coaching staff realizes that our players play other Country Day sports and spend quality family time during the summers. Our summer workouts are offered during three time periods each day and our competitions, practices and camps are kept to a minimum so that our players can meet their responsibilities to other Country Day sports and their families. Country Day Athletic Conflicts During the summer, Torrey football players are expected to work around commitments to other Country Day sports and/or are excused from Torrey football commitments to play other Country Day sports. All conflicts and adjustments are to be communicated by the player to the coaches of both sports. Once the football season officially begins at fall camp, players are expected to be committed to football, and should not miss football activities for another sport. Overlapping Athletic Seasons As stated in the LJCD athletic handbook, all Torrey athletes are to complete their present athletic season (football team in the playoffs) before moving on to their next season (basketball practice has begun). However, because the Torrey football coaching staff encourages and supports multi-sport athletes, football players are permitted to begin to transition into their winter sports while the football team competes in the playoffs. Players may attend some limited basketball practices, etc. around their preparation for the football playoffs. All such limited practices, etc. will be set by the head football coach in cooperation with the winter season head coaches. Family Vacation Time Torrey football players are excused from all summer participation while away on family vacations. Torrey football players are encouraged to take family vacations between the end of team camp in June and the first day of football in mid-August. Players 5 are expected to participate in workouts, competitions, camps and practices while they are in town. Weight Room The weight room is an extension of the practice field. Always arrive on time, dressed properly, with the focused and serious mind-set to improve your ability to make this a championship team. Players are expected to utilize their VoltAthletics account all year long, in and out of the season. Players who work hard in the weight room have the opportunity to join the 500, 600, or 700-pound club. Practices 1. Football practices begin approximately 2 weeks before the school year begins. These practices are mandatory. 2. As a general rule, practices on school days will be held from 3:15-5:30 PM Monday-Thursday. Addionally, players are expected to do their “football homework” by studying their opponents through Hudl. 3. Football players will lift weights as a team twice a week during the season. Varsity players will lift Mondays and Wednesdays. JV players will lift Tuesdays and Thursdays. 4. Practice time is sacred. We will win one workout at a time. We cannot improve if we are not dedicated to practice, and we cannot defeat opponents who out practice us. During the fall season, for 22 hours per day, each young man on the team is a student, an artist, a son, a brother, a friend, a boyfriend, etc. For 2+ hours per day he is a football player. Each player must dedicate himself to football only from 3:15-5:30 p.m. each afternoon. All conflicts (appointments on and off campus, additional academic work, participation in the arts, etc.) must be kept to an absolute minimum. No player who is in school that day may ever miss a practice without first informing the head coach that he is going to miss. Any player who misses or is late to practice for any reason may miss playing time to the discretion of the head coach. 5. We dress as a team for all practices: -t-shirts must be Torrey football t-shirts from this or any other year -shorts must be Torrey football shorts from this or any other year -when in full pads you must be in Torrey practice jersey and pants -socks must be white, black, royal, or gray -if long-sleeved shirts or tights are worn, they must be white, black, royal, or gray 6.
