They focus on developing a new vocabulary for training options and use CIS to look up various education and training programs and the schools that offer them. OBJECTIVES Students will . • Identify the education and training alternatives post-high school. • Research details of postsecondary options using CIS. PREPARATION Select words for a vocabulary list for your class. Review the answer sheets for Further Education Diagram and Education and Training worksheets to ensure that they are current and correct. Make overheads of the Further Education Diagram worksheet and answers, and the Education and Training answers. Review CIS Programs of Study and Training and Schools files. MATERIALS Further Education Diagram worksheet and overhead Further Education Diagram Answers overhead Education and Training worksheets Education and Training Answers overhead COMPUTER USE CIS Programs of Study and Training CIS Oregon Schools CIS U.S. Schools SUBJECT AREAS Any TIME REQUIRED 90 minutes (computer access for 45 minutes) GROUP SIZE Class, individual, pairs or groups STEPS 1. As a class, brainstorm and compile a list of the types of post-high school education and training they are aware of. Project the overhead of the Further Education Diagram. Instruct students to complete the blanks on their worksheets with a definition and a training length for each word. Students should record their best guess if they are not sure. 3. Project the Further Education Diagram Answers overhead. Discuss the relationships between the types and other factors, such as entry requirements, retraining options, non-traditional students, and the cost of education and training. 4. Discuss the concept of “lifelong learning” and ask students for examples of adults they know who are gaining new skills or retraining. Discuss night school, part-time study, and distance education. 5. Demonstrate to students how they can use CIS to find Programs of Study and Training programs they are interested in. Show students how to find an occupation and link to the program for the occupation by clicking Programs of Study and Training under the “Related Information.” 6. Explain to students that if they know the name of a school and want to find out whether it offers a program they can use the CIS Schools file to find the school and investigate the programs of study it offers. 7. Once students understand how the CIS files are arranged, distribute the Education and Training worksheet and have students use CIS to complete it. Project the Education and Training Answers worksheet for students to check their answers against. VARIATION 1. Examples of schools on the Education and Training worksheet can be altered to reflect subject areas and related programs of study.
