Records, [Box #, Folder #], Special Collections Research Center, University of Chicago Library Historical Note Current Anthropology began publication in January 1960 under editor Sol Tax, with support from the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. From its beginning, it has been an international journal of general anthropology, and is considered the major scholarly periodical in anthropology for a worldwide audience covering all subdivisions of the field. The journal is devoted to research on humankind, and thus encompasses the full range of anthropological scholarship on human cultures and other primate species. Papers in a wide variety of areas, including social, cultural, and physical anthropology as well as ethnology and ethnohistory, archaeology, prehistory, folklore, and linguistics are all published in Current Anthropology. This allows for open communication across the subfields of anthropology. The journal publishes articles, reports, interviews, book reviews, and discussion and commentary. Current Anthropology also serves as an informational clearing house for international writers. The major articles in each issue are published with "CA treatment," where multiple commentaries along with the author’s replies are published with the article itself. This allows a forum for discussion and debate. The readership of the journal can participate in the editorial policy through an informal body of professional Associates, which now number more than 2,000 from more than 100 countries. Scope Note This collection includes Current Anthropology’s office records from its inception in 1959 through the 1970s; including subscription records, correspondence, memoranda, and financial records. It is arranged into five series. Series I: Administrative, contains the administrative records of the Current Anthropology office. This includes material concerning the actual workings of the journal, its publishing, and conference notes that were featured in the journal. This series is primarily composed of correspondence and conference notes, arranged alphabetically and chronologically, respectively. There are also notes on the publishing and printing process of the journal and financial records for the journal’s budget, arranged chronologically. Lastly, there are also informational brochures for data processing and data storage devices, as well as records for the International Directory of Anthropology. 4 Series II: Editorial, contains records of work reviewed for publication in Current Anthropology. This includes publication notes and drafts of manuscripts, as well as records of manuscripts that were received by the office and personnel files. This series contains production notes, page proofs, and department corrections of issues of Current Anthropology, arranged chronologically; financial salary ledgers arranged chronologically and personnel files arranged alphabetically; records of manuscripts under review for possible publication; moribund or rejected manuscripts; and published manuscripts arranged alphabetically by author. Series III: Associates, contains the records of Current Anthropology’s associates, both private and institutional, as well as copies of the Associate Reply Letters sent out with journal issues and replies received. This series is composed primarily of records of Associates, which includes their subscription files and copies of manuscripts or comments that were submitted. There are three main sections in this series - Associate’s Reply Letters, which are arranged chronologically; Associate’s records and correspondence, arranged alphabetically; and records of institutional Associates, also arranged alphabetically. Additional material related to the journal's Associates is found in Series V. Series IV: Artifacts and Audio-Visual Material, contains microfilm records of Current Anthropology’s Associates’ files, as well as other artifacts contained in the collection. The majority of this series is composed of microfilm records, arranged chronologically, which contain both Associates’ records and copies of articles published in Current Anthropology. There are also several artifacts in this series, including wooden print blocks of both the map drawing which heads the Associate’s Reply Letters and the signature line of Sol Tax. Series V: Card Files, contains index card records of both Associates’ files and Associate’s Reply Letters. Most of this series is made up of subscription records of private and institutional associates, arranged alphabetically. The rest is composed of records of responses to Associate’s Reply Letters, used to create an International Directory of Anthropology. These are arranged alphabetically. This series also contains index card records of the International Directory of Anthropology, sorted by field of specialty.
