Sports Ups and downs and ups and downs By Ryan Wood Tue Jul 08, 2008, 12:06 PM EDT PLYMOUTH - By Ryan Wood Correspondent WAREHAM – The first quarter of the Wareham Gatemen’s season mimicked a classic Cape Cod riptide; they got swept into the sea, and as soon as they got back up, they got sucked right back in. The Gatemen would win a game and halt a losing streak, and then they would fall right back into a string of consecutive losses. But over the past week and a half, and after a five-game winless streak, the Gatemen rolled off three wins in a row. The riptide seemed to have subsided until the team lost, 4-2, to the Brewster Whitecaps Monday. The Gatemen entered this week with a 7-11-1 record. Sunday night, the Gatemen beat the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, 4-3. Starting pitcher Robby Broach (Tulane) earned his first win of the summer and evened his record at 1-1. With the victory, the Gatemen avenged an early season, 10-3 loss to the Sox. Aaron Baker (Oklahoma), who’s been on a recent hot streak for the Gatemen, homered and hit a two-run double to power Wareham to the win. Kipp Schutz (Indiana) added a solo home run for the Gatemen. Saturday, the Gatemen earned their third shutout victory of the season. They blanked Cotuit, 4-0, thanks in large part to the solid work of starting pitcher Brandon Workman (Texas), who took a no-hitter into the ninth inning. In the 4-0 win, Workman dueled with Kettleers starter Paul Applebee. Both pitched complete games. Cotuit’s leadoff hitter, left fielder Mike Bianucci, broke up Workman’s no-hitter in the ninth with a one-out single. The next batter, Evan Crawford, got Cotuit’s second hit of the game before Workman closed it out with a strikeout and a groundout. Wareham scored two runs in the bottom of the first, one off an error, and the other coming from a Blake Dean (LSU) RBI single. They added two more in the top of the second. Ryan Pineda (Cal State Northridge) laced a two-run single to put Wareham ahead, 4-0. Workman improved to 2-1 with the victory. After his first four outings this season, Workman was tied for the team lead in wins (two) and fewest walks allowed (eight), and he led the team in innings pitched (27.1), strikeouts (38), fewest runs allowed by a starting pitcher (six), batting average against (1.77), and he’s the only pitcher on the staff with a complete game and a shutout. Heading into this week, Workman led the Cape League in strikeouts, 12 ahead of Brewster’s Caleb Coltham. He also led the league in innings pitched. The three-game winning streak the Gatemen put together over the holiday weekend began on the Fourth of July. In the 4-3 win over Bourne, their second win at Doran Park, Wareham’s Brett Eibner (Arkansas) provided the fireworks by driving in all four runs and hitting a two-run home run, which tied the game in the top of the third inning. Eibner’s two-run single to left field in the top of the seventh gave Wareham the come-from-behind victory. On the mound, Max Pearlman (Harvard) picked up his first win of the season, while Chris Hicks (Georgia Tech) registered his first save of the summer. Before the three consecutive wins, the Gatemen fell into slump after having just pulled themselves out of one. The Gatemen broke out of a six-game losing streak (June 20-26) by winning two in a row, a 9-3 victory June 27 at Chatham and a 3-2 win June 28 at home against the Harwich Mariners. The Gatemen then tied Brewster before losing three straight heading into July 4. The 5-5 tie against Brewster was called after nine innings due to darkness, which was unfortunate for the Gatemen. They tied a season high with 11 hits, getting two hits from Eibner, Pineda, Connor Rowe (Texas) and Steve Liddle (Vanderbilt), and one hit from Baker, Raynor Campbell (Baylor), and Shea Vucinich (Washington State). 2 of 3 7/9/2008 10:24 AM Ups and downs and ups and downs - Plymouth, MA - Wicked Local Pl... http://www.wickedlocal.com/plymouth/sports/x833728302/Ups-and-do... The Gatemen then lost July 1 to Bourne. In the 13-4 loss, the Gatemen allowed a season-high 13 runs and 17 hits. The next night, the Gatemen fell, 3-2, to the Falmouth Commodores. And then, July 3, playing in Orleans, the Gatemen dropped a 4-2 decision to the Cardinals. That night, the Gatemen played in front of the largest number of fans they have seen this season, as 2,506 fans packed Eldredge Park. News and notes Entering this week, Aaron Baker (Oklahoma) had hit safely in six straight games (June 29-July 5). He had eight hits during that streak. Saturday, the Gatemen announced their final roster for the remainder of the season. Six non-roster invitees made the team. They are: Baker, Matt Way (Washington State), Ryan Pineda (Cal State Northridge), Chris Hicks (Georgia Tech), Jimmy Saris (Georgetown), and Shea Vucinich (Washington State) Pitcher Mike Seander (Duke), who made two appearances on the mound for the Gatemen this summer, injured his arm and has returned home. This Friday (July 11), the Gatemen host Bourne, but if you show up at Spillane Field in Wareham, you won’t see a thing. The game will be held in New Bedford. Bring your pens, baseballs, bats, and souvenirs Sunday (July 13), when the Gatemen host Yarmouth-Dennis. This will be the second of three autograph nights the Gatemen will hold at Spillane Field. After the game, which begins at 5 p.m., fans will have a chance to go onto the field and get autographs from Wareham players and coaches. Ben Sheets, a former Wareham Gatemen pitcher (1998) and current member of the Milwaukee Brewers, made the National League All-Star team for the fourth time in his eight years in Major League Baseball. Sheets is 10-2 with 97 strikeouts and a 2.77 earned run average.
