Harriman, NY 2 Welcome! A Welcome Message from Lieutenant Colonel Brad Wambeke, Acting Director, Civil Engineering Division Department of Civil & Mechanical Engineering Welcome to the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point. We are excited to be the host school for the 2015 Upstate New York Region American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Competition and welcome you here as our guests. The West Point Student Chapter officers have invested a tremendous amount of time into the planning and execution of the many activities included in this event. We anticipate about 350 attendees from 14 schools will be here to participate. During your time at West Point, I hope you are able to spend some time enjoying the rich history that “your military academy” has to offer. West Point was first established in 1802 and is identified by ASCE as the Nation’s First School of Civil Engineering. Please take time to walk around the academy to enjoy such things as Trophy Point which features Battle Monument, many historic weapons from the ages and a million-dollar view of the Hudson River Valley, the Cadet Chapel, the West Point Cemetery, and the many statues and other historic stone buildings that have stood the test of time. West Point is a unique institution charged with educating, training and inspiring its graduates to be leaders of character to serve the Nation. Each class enters with approximately 1300 cadets and graduates with about 1000 after 47 months at the Academy. The program is rigorous containing academic, physical and military components that develop a well-rounded graduate able to face the strenuous requirements of today’s Army. During their summers, cadets take part in intensive military training at West Point and abroad which exposes them to the Army and prepares them for their future duties as Army officers. During their senior year, cadets select a branch of service which can include the Army Corps of Engineers, Infantry, Aviation or one of many other branches. Graduates typically serve a minimum of five years on active duty in that branch and three years as members of the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). I also encourage each of you to take advantage of this time to learn something not only about civil engineering, but about the experiences your fellow students are having as part of their education. Please enjoy your time here and have fun. Let me or any of my students and faculty members know if there is anything we can do to make this event a better experience for you. 3 Scavenger Hunt!
