FRIENDS FOR LEARNING COURSE CATALOG Spring 2017 Registration for Spring 2017 classes begin at 8:00 a.m. January 25 and continue throughout the semester. Registration On Line: Go to the Friends For Learning website (www.friendsforlearning.com) and click on “Registration.” Follow the prompts. You will need an email address. (Please do not use an email address shared with someone else.) You will first be asked to pay the $20.00 membership fee using a debit or credit card. Then you may enroll in classes. Help with online registration. If you would like help registering online, come to CHE 202 at University Place Campus anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. January 25, 2017. Members of the FFL Board of Directors and ISU Continuing Education staff will be there to assist you. Please bring your email address, passwords, and a smart phone if you have them. Mail in Registration: If you prefer registering by mail, print a copy of the “Class Selection” form found on the FFL website. Complete it, attach your check MADE OUT TO ISU for the $20.00 membership fee and mail to the following address: Continuing Education – FFL 921 W. 8th Avenue, Stop 8062 Pocatello, ID 83209 Parking Passes / Name Badges– FFL Members from Fall 2016 semester will continue to use the same parking pass previously issued. These are valid through August 31, 2017. New FFL members will receive a parking pass and name badge by mail shortly after you register. To avoid a parking fine, display your parking pass in your vehicle when you attend FFL classes at University Place. Replacement parking passes may be purchased for $5.00 at the above address. As this organization has grown, the need for more volunteers has increased. We need volunteers in the following areas: curriculum; cultural cuisine; hiking, walking, exploring; or helping the leadership. By registering for this class, you will be sent an email with the volunteer form to fill out as to the areas in which you would like to volunteer. Thanks for your interest. Most Walking (W) activities are limited to easy trips and are usually in the vicinity of Idaho Falls. Walking activities, when combined with Exploring (E) may be some distance from Idaho Falls. Activities range from skiing, snowshoeing, camping, biking, canoeing, horseback riding, or whatever you might like to do indoors or outdoors. We are guided by member ideas and might try anything. A planning meeting and luncheon will be held at Stockman's Restaurant at 11:00 a.m., Feb. 16. Capital Tour the Art Museum of Eastern Idaho exhibits with Education Director Alexa Stanger. Visit with and watch painting demonstrations with featured artist, Scott Berger. Maximum: 80 Credentials: Alexa is the Education Director for the Art Museum of Eastern Idaho. Scott is an award winning local artist, well known for local landscapes and cityscapes in oil. With a BA in art, Scott has explored a variety of techniques in his professional career. In this class you will learn how to blow, cap, and paint two eggs. Acrylic paints, brushes and a tool to make dots will be provided. Or you may bring your own paints and fine line brush. Maximum: 20. Credentials: Denise has been teaching egg painting for more than 20 years. During her years as a school teacher, she allowed students the opportunity to paint eggs as Christmas ornaments. Those who have taken the class previously have first preference. We will be using the book : Spanish Verb Tenses 2nd edition by Dorothy Richmond. Both oral and written activities will be used. Maximum: 20 Credentials: Pablo Conde is originally from Colombia. He is bilingual using both Spanish and English. He has been enrolled at EITC in a class to learn syntax and grammar in English and Spanish. Blvd Visit the labs at the CAES (Center For Advanced Energy Studies) building to see the kind of research they are doing and experience simulation in the CAVE (4-sided, 3D Computer-Assisted Virtual Environment.) Zumba’s easy-to-follow choreography and Latin rhythms take the work out of workout. Super effective? Super fun? Check and check. Zumba combines all elements of fitness – cardio, strength, balance, flexibility, coordination, endurance, energy – a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class. This eight-week reading and pronunciation class will use TPRS, a method of second-language teaching that uses stories to provide vocabulary and immediate understanding leading to actually speaking the language. Maximum: 20 Credentials: Earline spent seven years living and working in Latin America and 15 years teaching English to speakers of other languages. Joy is a retired teacher who worked with immigrant Hispanic children. Jackie has participated in several Spanish-language classes. Holmes Vick Van Sickle and Senia Weinrich will facilitate this semester. You must have some knowledge of how to play the game of Pinochle to sign up for this class. Each participant is expected to mix with the other players, and groups will be formed at the discretion of the facilitator. Players must buy lunch. We play every Monday. Elva This bi-weekly class will focus on safe Yoga for those over 50. It will use techniques of B.K.S. Iyengar focusing on posture and breath. Students will need a yoga mat. Blocks and strap are optional. Preference will be given to individuals already attending the prior semester's class. Maximum: 16 Credentials: Dino is a retired Archeologist. She has taken Yoga classes for the past five years. She taught the class last semester and all the students said it was wonderful.
