Ashfall Fossil Beds SHP Ashfall Fossil Beds State SHP (imprint here) park information: Nearly 12 million years ago, a supervolcanic eruption in what is now Idaho created a blizzard of volcanic ash that devastated the wildlife in northern Nebraska. Untold numbers of barrel-bodied rhinos, three-toed horses, llama-like camels and saber-toothed deer perished in a waterhole, and were drifted under by volcanic ash. Today, the animals skeletons are being revealed in the Park’s Rhino Barn, a building that protects the fossils buried in the ancient waterhole. Excavation is conducted by student paleontologists during the summer months. All fossils are left in-place for public viewing. Park hours are seasonal. May 1 - Memorial Day weekend: Tues. – Sat. from 10am to 4pm. Memorial Day weekend - Labor Day: Mon. – Sat. from 9am to 5pm, Sunday from 11am to 5pm. After Labor Day - second Sunday in October: Tues. – Sat. from 10am to 4pm, Sun. from 1pm to 4pm, Closed on Monday. $5/person fee plus a Nebraska Park Permit required.
