Nzeb Certification 3.1 Documentation Requirements

3.0 NZEB Documentation Requirements NZEB CERTIFICATION 3.1 DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS OVERVIEW Net zero energy is recognized worldwide as one of the highest aspirations in energy performance in the built environment. The International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) Certification™ was created to allow projects to demonstrate net zero energy performance, building an advanced cohort of projects with the integrity of third-party performance certification. This program, the only international net zero energy certification: • certifies that the building is truly operating as claimed, harnessing energy from the sun, wind or earth to produce net annual energy demand through a third-party audit of actual performance data • provides a platform for the building to inform and accelerate other net zero energy efforts throughout the world • celebrates a significant accomplishment and differentiates both the building and those responsible for the its success in this quickly evolving market The NZEB Certification’s parent program, the Living Building Challenge (LBC), is the world’s most stringent green building standard. Through the Energy Petal, the LBC addresses energy performance at an even deeper level than NZEB Certification, including requiring net positive performance and energy storage for resiliency. Projects interested in going even further than net zero energy and achieving the ultimate standard in sustainable, restorative development are encouraged to consider the LBC please visit: www.living-future.org/lbc NET ZERO ENERGY BUILDING CERTIFICATION STANDARD The NZEB Certification Standard is as follows: One hundred percent of the building’s energy needs on a net annual basis must be supplied by on- site renewable energy. No combustion is allowed. All required documentation for certification is contained in the form below. Please note that there are a number of NZEB Certification exceptions, related to use of offsetting off-site renewables, on-site combustion, and other circumstances. These exceptions, and associated required documentation, are found in the online Dialogue, as well as the Energy Petal Handbook. International Living Future InstituteTM Page 2 3.0 NZEB Documentation Requirements HOW THIS INFORMATION WILL BE USED Audit Process All certification documentation will be shared with the project’s assigned third-party auditor, who is responsible for performing a document review once the twelve-month performance period is complete. Public Education A core aspect of the ILFI’s NZEB program is the creation of a positive cycle of accomplishment and education through certified projects. Each certified project informs and educates a larger circle, and so on, until the NZE cohort is in the many thousands, where it will start to catalyze a larger movement in standard practice, knowledge-mainstreaming, and codification. The information provided both through the required certification documentation and optional case study information will enable the creation of case studies and educational material which ILFI will disseminate through an array of channels, including articles, online case studies, books, and the New Building Institute’s Getting to Zero database. By participating in this certification, the party seeking certification agrees that the Institute may use any of the provided information (except for any detailed construction drawings) for educational purposes, including with the general public. The Institute retains the right to use and/or publish essays written by the Team, and will attribute the content to the members of the Team as directed. By submitting photographs and/or 3D renderings of the project, the Team grants the Institute royalty-free use of these image(s) in promotional material, such as web-based, printed, and other presentation formats, to support the Living Building Challenge or one of its auxiliary programs. The Institute will use the image(s) in a manner consistent with a Creative Commons “Attribution-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States” license. If certain other documentation poses an issue for project teams, please raise it with the ILFI for further discussion. The Institute and the Auditor will treat with confidentiality any/all detailed construction drawings submitted by members of a Team.
