Statement on Placement of Students into Math Classes in Catholic High Schools in the Diocese of San Jose The best high school math placement is the appropriate placement, not the most advanced one. Success in high school and college math depends ultimately on an in-depth understanding, not the rate of advancement. Taking the time to learn the material well is the best way to build both competence and confidence in math. A solid foundation in Algebra is critical for success in high school math from Geometry through Calculus. All of the Catholic high schools in the Diocese of San Jose have pathways through the math curriculum that will allow qualified students who take Algebra 1 in their freshman year to complete a math sequence that includes Calculus in their senior year, if necessary. These pathways will require extra work on the student's part. Depending on the school, some options include a 6-8 week summer math course or taking two math classes during the school year. Please consult the course catalog from the individual school to see the specific requirements. It is important for all to understand that enrollment in Calculus is not a prerequisite for admission to many colleges/programs. Students should be encouraged to take and learn from math classes that best suit their needs and rate of development.
