Supporting Community Sport in a Big Way

SUPPORTING COMMUNITY SPORT IN A BIG WAY Rebecca Johnston (Gold Industry Group (GIG) Executive Officer) with Kelly Carter (our VP Legal & Compliance in Australia and GIG Vice-Chairperson) with West Coast Fever players at the season opener (above) Western Australia’s gold miners, including our company, have committed a combined A$5m to support netball in Western Australia. It will see the game expand at a community grassroots level, where it already has around 230,000 participants. The three-year, record partnership deal between Netball WA and the Gold Industry Group (GIG) will also support the State’s elite netball team, West Coast Fever, and the Shooting Stars indigenous programme. At the launch ceremony, our VP Legal & Compliance in Australia, Kelly Carter, who is also GIG Vice- Chairperson, said the partnership “supports netball and women’s sport on a scale never before seen in Australia, mirroring the industry’s strong drive towards gender diversity”. She added: “This is an unprecedented project for the resources sector, with gold miners working collectively to generate real benefit for our communities in both metropolitan Perth and the remote regions in which we operate.” The netball sponsorship complements a wide range of Gold Fields initiatives which support sports in our communities in WA: • In April Gold Fields became Football West’s official Regional Football Programme partner, on top of being its headline sponsor. The new partnership will see a growth in football clinics, school visits and development programmes, right across regional Western Australia. • Our St Ives mine is the main sponsor of the Kambalda Eagles Australian Rules football team, which plays in the Goldfields football league. • Granny Smith in turn sponsors the Laverton Nightfields Football Programme in partnership with the Laverton Police. The programme is aimed at young people in Laverton, which is about 25km from Granny Smith. We recently supported the Nightfields kids’ trip to Perth. In addition to various activities, they also had the chance to meet the West Coast Eagles football team, and watch them play against the Gold Coast team Explaining Gold Fields’ support for sport, Stuart Mathews, EVP for Australasia, says: “Our partnerships with community sports associations are aligned with our goal to promote strong communities where we operate. Providing great sporting options for families and stakeholders is an important part of this.” Share your feedback on this Newsflash:Email [email protected] Send your feedback on this Newsflash or news from your team to [email protected].
