EPC Exhibit 133-27 May 14, 2010 THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Dewey Section To: Caroline Kent, Chair Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee Cc: Members of the Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee Karl E. Debus-López, Chief, U.S. General Division From: Giles Martin, Assistant Editor Dewey Decimal Classification Via: Joan S. Mitchell, Editor in Chief Dewey Decimal Classification OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. Re: 670-680 Manufacturing; Manufacture of products for specific uses The attached PDF includes the changes approved by EPC in EPC Exhibit 132-25, dated October 22, 2009. That exhibit incorporated some changes to 687 that had been proposed as part of changes to the 640s in EPC Exhibit 131-23, dated May 15, 2009. In addition, this exhibit includes the relevant parts of EPC Exhibit 132A-22.1 on hats, dated January 28, 2010. The exhibit features the DDC 23 version of standard subdivisions. Indexing of topics in 687 Clothing and accessories has been coordinated with those topics in 391 Costume and personal appearance and in 646.3-646.7 Clothing and accessories, where I worked with Joan Mitchell and Winton Matthews. At EPC Meeting 132, there was the following discussion: Lyn McKinney: With 681.761, condoms look out of place, since they don’t seem to be “equipment.” Giles Martin: This is not the main number for condoms, but the manufacturing number. Winton Matthews: Could we add something like surgical dressings? Giles Martin: I’ll look at adding surgical dressings to the including note at 681.761. I’ve checked, and the manufacture of surgical dressings would not go in 681.761, but in 677.8 Surgical gauze and cotton. So we can’t add it here, and we can’t find another good example for 681.761, so we’ve left the including note alone. 670 Manufacturing 670 670 Manufacturing Including planning and design for manufactured products Class here manufactured products Class military applications in 623; class planning and design for specific kinds of products in 671–679; class the arts in 700.
