This was during the construction of the trans-continental railway to Portland. Gilliam County then began to be populated by settlers who engaged in wheat and livestock ranching. There was some lumbering in the far south of the county. The 1880's saw the establishment of most of the public cemeteries. Hwy. 19 (Locust Street) into town. Turn right off of Locust Street onto Main Street, go about 0.6 of a mile up the hill to the cemetery below the water tower. You will pass the Elementary and High Schools. (Arlington 1971 USGS Quad. map.) BLALOCK 8.75 8 1880-1895 T3N R19E S36 Now underwater in Lake Umatilla. In 1960 all known graves (16) were moved to the Arlington Cemetery as the John Day Dam was being constructed. (Not shown on Sundale N. W. 1971 USGS Quad. map.) BROWN, FAMILY A 2 5 1881 T3S R22E 810 AKA: 1. DEVILS GAP Go 7 miles north of Condon on OR. Hwy. 19 at Milepost 29, turn right (southeast) on Cayuse Canyon Road for 5.1 miles, then turn right (south) onto a private road. Go 1 mile to the confluence of Rock Creek and South Fork of Rock Creek. There were 20 known burials 1972. NOTE: This site is thought to be on private property. (Devils Gap 1970 USGS Quad. map. Metsker Land Ownership Atlas 1934 lists H. G. Brown Ranch.) CECIL CHILDREN, A ? ? 13 Feb 1877 T3N R22E S12 ANNA LAURA AND WALTER This small burial ground is located in the Northwest 1/4 of the Northwest 1/4 of Section 12. It is on the heights above the left (west) bank of the valley of Willow Creek, upstream from its mouth with the Columbia River. The burial ground is about half a mile to the northeast from the nearest point on the new alignment of OR. Hwy. 74; at 2.2 miles south of Heppner Junction. It is out of sight of the road and access is on foot through a farm field, possibly private property. A range fire has cleared the sage and grass this fall (2000) so we were able to locate it. There are only three tombstones left here. They are for Walter Cecil aged 5 years, 7 months, 21 days died 13 February 1877. Anna Laura Cecil aged 7 years, 11 months, 5 days died 17 February 1877. Range I Section were the children of William Y. Cecil and Mary Ellen Cecil who settled in 1862 starting the hamlet of Cecil in what is now Morrow County. Elizabeth M. Shippy Died 12 December 1879 aged 32 years, 7 months and 13 days. There is evidence of other graves here as well as holes doug that were not fully filled back in. With the site having being totally burned over a few days before, we could not tell if they were recent or not. When Gilliam and Morrow Counties were created in February 1885 the graves were then in Gilliam County. {2 September 2000} (Heppner Junction 1962 USGS Quad. map) CLEM ? 0.15 ? ? T15 R21E S32 Leave OR. Hwy 19 at Milepost 23.1 and turn right (west), go 1.2 miles to Clem. Turn right (northerly) onto Clem Road and drive another 1.7 miles to a driveway, turn left (west) to the cemetery, which is about 70 yards off of the county road. (Mikkalo 1970 USGS Quad. map.) CYRUS CHILDREN A 0.01 2 1877 T1N R2OE 515 Go 0.35 of a mile east of the railway overpass over Middle Rock Creek Lane and 0.45 of a mile east of Rock Creek community. The grave is about 500-600 feet southwest of the road on a low ridge overlooking the valley. Go 9.6 miles northwest of OR. Hwy. 19 at Olex via Middle Rock Creek Lane. A rock-enclosed grave for the three children of Lawson and Martha H. Milkey Cyrus is located about 0.25 of a mile upstream from the Rock Creek School, near the Don Ramsay home (1990). The children: George W. Cyrus, died 28 May 1877, aged 4 years, 6 months, 6 days; Lillia May Cyrus, died 28 May 1877, aged 1 year, 8 months, 28 days; and Wayman Cyrus, died 4 June 1677, age 9 years, 4 months, 15 days. (Turner Butte 1964-75 USGS Quad. map.) DERN, TOMMY A 0.3 2 10 Apr 1885 T1N R22E S26 AKA: 1. DEAN Located 18.7 miles southeast of Arlington. Drive 4 miles south of Arlington on OR. Hwy. 19. Turn left (east) onto Fourmile Road; 322 Oregon Burial Site Guide Gilliam County Nam of Cemetery and also known as Number of burials Acres I Condition I Date started or earliest known lariat I Township I Range I Section after driving 4.8 miles on Fourmile Road, turn right (southerly) onto Eightmile Canyon Road and go 8.6 miles (incidentally you will pass by Eightmile Cemetery). Turn right (south) onto Davidson Road and drive another 1.5 miles. The cemetery is on the left. There are 11 known burials. {14 July 1990} (Hickland Butte 1964 USGS Quad. map.) EIGHTMILE B 0.3 1 1880'S T1N R22E S5 AKA: 1. MONTAGUE Located 12 miles from Arlington in Eightmile Canyon. Go 4 miles south of Arlington on OR. Hwy. 19, then left (southeast) 4.8 miles on Fourmile Road before turning right (south) and going 3.3 miles on Eightmile Canyon Road. The cemetery is located in the Eightmile Canyon Valley. {14 July 1990} (Hickland Butte 1964 USGS Quad. map.) EWING FAMILY A 0.01 ? ? T3N R22E 934 Reportedly Harvey Ewing's wife and sister are buried in this section, about two miles southwest of OR. Hwy. 74 at Rhea. This is a mile or so southwest of the bygone railway stop of Rhea, within the Willow Creek Valley and up Eightmile Canyon. (Not shown on Horn Butte 1964 USGS Quad. map.) FLETT A 0.08 ? 1903 T2S R22E S9 This cemetery is on the lower slope of a ridge overlooking Rock Creek Valley. Leave OR. Hwy. 19 at Milepost 17, (at Olex), and go southeast past Olex Cemetery via Upper Rock Creek Road 8.7 miles and then 200 yards right on the (southwest) side of road, up slope behind a ranch house. It was fenced when visited in 1971. There were 12 known burials at that time. NOTE: This site is on private property. IGO GRANGE 8.9 miles northwest of Condon on OR. Hwy. 206, and then 2.3 miles west and south on Alville Lane. {Nov. 1987} (Igo Butte 1970 USGS Quad. map.) LONEROCK B 3 1 1922 T6S R24E S4 Drive 4.7 miles east from Condon on OR. Hwy. 206. At Milepost 45.6 turn right (south) onto Lonerock Road, going 16.5 miles to the old town of Lonerock. Turn right (south) of the town, still on Lonerock Road for an additional 1.9 miles. Then turn left (east) onto Campbell Lane, driving about 0.9 of a mile along the Wheeler County Line, and lastly a hard left up a ridge and back 0.3 of a mile to the cemetery. Hwy. 206 to Milepost 45.6, then go 6.1 miles southeast on Lonerock Road and then a further 8.1 miles south on Lost Valley Road.
