STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Wilhelmsen House, a two-storey stone and brick Federation Free Classical style commercial building, has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons: the place is important for the aesthetic qualities imparted by the stone and rendered facades worked in classical details balanced about the domed tower; the place has particulary fine detailing and rich decoration throughout its interior spaces which is uncommon in extant commercial buildings of this age; the place has landmark qualities being the visual closure at the west end of Phillimore Street as it approaches Mouat Street; the place is an important component in a nineteenth century precinct of buildings; Register of Heritage Places – Permanent Entry Wilhelmsen House 1 23/06/2000 the place is representative of late nineteenth century shipping offices with the grand business hall and separately tenanted offices upstairs; the place has a close association with the firm Dalgety & Co., a prominent Australian merchant company; and, the place is associated with J.J.
