Physical Education Job Description 300321

YARM SCHOOL Teacher of Physical Education & Girls’ Games (Years 7-13) The Candidate Applications are invited for a well-qualified Teacher of Physical Education & Girls’ Games from September 2021. This post is a full-time position. It would particularly suit an NQT. We would also welcome applications from well-qualified, committed graduates who would like to train as a Physical Education teacher. The ability and desire to teach academic Physical Education to GCSE and A Level standard would be an advantage. Aside from a passion for teaching Physical Education, candidates should be keen to contribute to the broader life of the school through cultural, sporting or other extra-curricular activities. This is an expectation for all teachers at the school. Yarm School offers the Secondary PGCE with QTS in association with the University of Buckingham. This award is of exactly the same standing as the PGCEs awarded by university education departments or the direct training schemes run by state schools. It qualifies students to teach in any maintained or independent school in the country. If you wish to discuss this opportunity further please contact the Deputy Head Academic, Mr Darren Morton, for further information ([email protected]). Outline details of how we support the training process at Yarm School can be found in our Teaching Training Booklet. Physical Education & Games at Yarm School Sport at Yarm School forms an important part of both the curriculum and extra-curricular activity. Pupils receive both PE and Games lessons in the timetable and many choose sporting options as their two Activity lessons. After school and at weekends, we run a programme of sporting fixtures against similar schools: there is always a weekly practice in building towards fixtures. There are occasional mini-trips and sports tours – recent highlights include visits to Holland and North America. The main sports for girls are hockey and netball; for boys the main sports are rugby and hockey. Whilst we currently play each sport on a termly basis, these sports are increasingly being played across two terms from September through to March. In the summer the main sports are cricket and tennis, with opportunities to compete in athletics and rounders. Rowing is also a popular option throughout the year for both boys and girls. We run teams in every age group for all sports listed and in most age groups there are A/B and sometimes C teams fielded. This is possible because a large number of non-games department teachers are committed to the enrichment programme. Sport is extremely popular and important to the whole school ethos and pupils are proud to represent the school. We have high standards in terms of commitment and attitude to school sport. A large number of our pupils gain representative honours at district, county or even national level. Several former pupils have progressed to professional sporting careers and England selection. In rowing, we even boast a former pupil who won an Olympic Gold Medal at London 2012. Many of our teams are successful and in recent years we have had netballers and hockey teams who have competed at national finals. The school has a strong tradition of producing high quality netball teams and we have a strong club link with Grangetown Netball Club. The ability to contribute and help develop our netball provision would be desirable. Success is important to us, but we teach with the ethos of ‘Sport for All,’ encouraging all pupils to achieve their potential and to enjoy playing sport. GCSE and A level Physical Education We offer the CAIE IGCSE Physical Education qualification and this is a popular option with Yarm School pupils. The department typically runs two GCSE groups, accounting for over a third of the year group, and results have been historically strong. In 2019 - the last year when examinations were taken as normal - 50% of IGCSE Physical Education grades were 9-8 (A*) and over 80% were 9-7 (A*/A). The department also has healthy numbers opting to take Physical Education at A level - fourteen students currently intend to do so next year. In 2019, when examinations were last taken as normal, 83% of A level Physical Education entries achieved A*-B. The ability and desire of candidates to teach academic Physical Education to GCSE and A Level standard would be an advantage in applying for the advertised position. Criminal Records Check In respect of successful applicants for all posts at the school where staff may come into contact with children, Yarm School is required to seek references from the current or most recent employer, as well as an enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) with a barred list check. A criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to working in the school. Applicants who are invited to interview should provide details of any criminal record under separate, confidential cover to the Headmaster before attending the interview. A copy of the school’s policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders and the DBS Code of Practice may be obtained from the Headmaster. Before an appointment is made routine checks will be undertaken to confirm identity and qualifications. Appointment Procedure Applications will only be accepted on the application form provided by the school. This should be completed electronically. All questions must be answered. The candidate may also submit a Curriculum Vitae if he/she wishes but this is not a requirement. Applications should be submitted with a covering letter (by email) explaining why the candidate and post are mutually suited. Applications should be e-mailed to the Headmaster, Dr Huw Williams, as soon as possible and no later than midday on Monday 19th April. The school reserves the right to interview before the closing date if appropriate to the context of the field. Applications should be submitted to: [email protected] Yarm School The Friarage Yarm TS15 9EJ Telephone 01642 786023 www.yarmschool.org Further information about the school, together with an application form and job description, can be found on our website under “vacancies.” Please email if you have any difficulties or queries..
