
BORWICK & PRIEST HUTTON VILLAGE NEWSLETTER OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2017 At St Mary’s Church, Borwick: St Mary’s Church is a “Chapel of Ease” in the Parish of Warton to provide a place of worship in the villages of Borwick and Priest Hutton. On the first Sunday of the Month at 9.30am is a service in contemporary language with hymns and Holy Communion. Every Tuesday at 8am is a said Eucharist, using the traditional language of the “Book of Common Prayer”. Harvest Festival The Harvest Festival will take place at St Mary’s on Sunday, 1st October at 9.30am. “Drop in” Soup and Sandwich Lunch Saturday, 4th November - Donations for St Mary’s Church - at Borwick and Priest Hutton Memorial Hall from 12.00 – 1.30pm. Email:[email protected] Claire Helme (Clerk to Borwick Parish Meeting) BORWICK & PRIEST HUTTON GARDENERS’ CLUB TUESDAY 24TH OCTOBER - SUE GILLON & MARGUERITE HUGHES – PLANTS TO EXTEND THE SEASON Marguerite has a wealth of experience talking to groups and Sue runs a specialist nursery in West Lancashire. They have paired knowledge and skills into a series of demonstrations using appropriate plant materials grown at Meadow View Plants to support their topic. This presentation will show us how to extend the gardening season into autumn, a feature many of us struggle to achieve. Plants will be on sale at the meeting. TUESDAY 28TH NOVEMBER- MAURICE STEEL – MADE IN CUMBRIA Maurice was born and brought up on a dairy farm in Bootle West Cumbria. During this time he had the pleasure of watching the local wildlife and through this he gained a vast knowledge of the area and in particular, the wildflowers which he has photographed throughout his life. Following his marriage he moved to a Forestry Commission farm in Eskdale and remained there until his retirement. The last time Maurice came to the club he gave us a wonderful talk on the wild orchids of Cumbria. This time he will take about all things Cumbrian. Wine and refreshments will follow the talk. Meetings are held in the Memorial Hall on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm. New members are always welcome. Diane Sunderland – Chairman BORWICK & PRIEST HUTTON WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Tuesday, 10thOctober – Card Making – Pam Beaumont This month our multi-talented Secretary, Pam Beaumont, will demonstrate the art of card making. During the evening members will be able to design and make a card of their own. Pam makes some lovely cards which she has showcased from time to time, so this will be an opportunity for her to show us the skills of her trade. Tuesday, 14th November – Lakeland Villages – Andrew Lowe The AGM will be held at the beginning of the meeting. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS MEETING WILL COMMENCE AT 7PM. The speaker for the evening will be Andrew Lowe who will take us on a journey of discovery to some well-known (and some not-so-well known) Lakeland villages.Andrew is an excellent speaker so this should be a very interesting talk. The W. I. is striving to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2021. The meetings and outings we hold are of a diverse interest and it would be nice to see an increase in membership to help to keep it running. Please feel free to come along to any meeting and give it a try. We are a friendly bunch and at the end of each meeting we always have a cuppa, cake and a good natter. Diane Sunderland BOWLS Indoor bowling takes place every Thursday from 2-4 pm. You will receive a warm welcome when you join us for an afternoon of social activity, light exercise and laughter. No need to worry about rules or being an expert (none of our members are). The equipment is all provided. The cost is £2 - (includes a cup of coffee/ tea & a biscuit). SWIMMING There is a public swimming session for locals at Capernwray Hall on Fridays from 6pm – 7pm (organised by Rich Lowndes from Capernwray Hall). The majority of attendees tend to be from Borwick & Priest Hutton. BADMINTON Badminton takes place on Wednesdays at 8pm in the Memorial Hall. This is not competitive League stuff - more a social knock-a-bout. All welcome. Keith Brady PILATES The Thursday evening Pilates group will begin again on October 12th. They are held on the last Saturday of the month starting October 28th through to March 24th, 10.00am - 11.45am. The exception to this is December Coffee Morning when the date is the 16th. This is usually a very enjoyable morning when we are entertained by some of our very talented, village musicians. October 28th November 25th December 16th January 27th February 24th March 24th COFFEE MORNINGS at the MEMORIAL HALL All welcome There is no charge for coffee, but donations are very welcome. At the end of the season the money donated is sent to our chosen charity which is usually decided at the first of the coffee mornings. So come along for a chat and a bit of a social and get to know your ‘neighbours’. You will be very welcome.
