Welcome to “PASS IT ON…” Wellington Rugby Leagues enewsletter for 2010. The idea of “PASS IT ON…” is that you do just that and forward it to as many people as you can, who then forward it to as many people as they can. The more people we can tell about the World of Wellington Rugby League the better!!! Message from Dingo Where is the rain? No doubt we will all be crying out for it to go away in the months ahead but it would be great to get a good dumping in the next week or so just to soften the fields a bit and get the grass growing again. That aside wasn’t it fantastic to see junior footy get underway last weekend with lots of supporters around the grounds in the sunshine and heaps of kids out there enjoying throwing the ball around. Our junior numbers are growing and that is a testament to the hard workers in all our local clubs. Parents, coaches and volunteers, sometimes one in the same, are the lifeblood of our game and I thank you all for your commitment to making sure our kids enjoy the great game. At the senior level Porirua again lead the way in premiers with Petone, University, Wainuiomata and Randwick bunched in behind and all capable of knocking off the premiers on their day. St George, Te Aroha and Upper Hutt are all working hard without much success and will need considerable improvement to challenge the 5 sides above them. Premier reserves see University and Randwick leading the way both undefeated, their clash this week should see an outright leader. Wainuiomata sit in 3rd spot just 2 points behind. Just 2 weeks into the Senior First season and there is two distinctive levels within the grade. 2009 runners up St George are again looking strong as are Randwick, Porirua and the new Ynui Natives team. A couple of big scores in the women’s comp see defending champions Randwick again looking hard to beat. 2010 is shaping up as a massive year for rugby league in Wellington with not only the Kiwis v England Test match scheduled, with the Junior Kiwis as a curtain raiser, but also an expanded NZSSSC National Rugby League Tournament and a bigger and better Futures Tournament for U12 and U14 district representative teams. Petone lost their previous unbeaten record to University in a Saturday Morning Sports Show with Wirangi Luke and Star Olsen, preview of the NRL and WRL bizarre score line 1 – 12. It was a very physical encounter with Saturday Afternoon Sports Round up with Roscoe University showing they can match an aggressive style of Hatton Monday Breakfast Show, Rugby League round up football and play for 80 minutes. with Noel Woods and Jason Hemson David Lomax’s Porirua Vikings remain as the only unbeaten team after four rounds and deserve to be competition favourites. Wainui have played some very close games, the young Lions are proving to be very competitive but will be tested this weekend against Petone. SG Ball is the NRL Under 18 competition. Api who is originally from Palmerston North came to Wellington in 2009 to attend the Weltec Rugby League academy under David Lomax. Api was a regular playing stand off for Te Aroha Eels in the WRL Premiership and starred for the WRL Under 18’s in the NYP in 2009. Api went over to Newcastle in Nov 2009 to trial and earned himself a contract for the 2010 SG Ball. The season started slowly for Api missing the first 3 games due to injury. “There was no coincidence that when Api appeared for Newcastle that they won 4 in row,’ David Lomax said. He also said that Api’s transition to SG Ball and the Newcastle Knights environment was made easier by the preparation and training he received while at Weltec. Api’s Newcastle team were knocked out last week in the first round of the SG Ball play off’s losing to Sydney Roosters 36 – 18. Api is a chance to get a call up to the Newcastle Toyota Cup Team, if he does he will stay in Newcastle, otherwise he will be returning to the WRL Premiership in preparation for preseason training at Newcastle in November. COACHES CORNER… Senior Club Coach Course (NZRL Level 3) is being held on the 30/31 May and 1st June at Pelorus Trust Sports House - Wellington Cost $150. This is a 3 day full time course. No matter what level you are training or coaching, planning your sessions is how to get the most out of your players and maximise development. Without planning you will not be able to see why or where things are working and in some cases not working in your trainings and game performance. Even the most experienced coaches need to plan their training sessions and after you do this for a season or two you have readymade sessions plans that you can call on in future, or give to someone else to run your team if you want a night off.
