Easy-Care Snake Plant

Easy-Care Snake Plant

Easy-Care Snake Plant Common Name: Snake Plant or Mother-in-law’s Tongue Botanical Name: Sansevieria trifasciata, now Dracaena trifasciata Light & Temperature needs: • Bright indirect light to medium light. • Avoid direct light from South or West • Warmer household temperatures consis- tently between 65o - 80oF. Water: • Water when the top 1” is dry. When watering, it is important to give them a soaking so that water comes out of the bottom of the pot. It’s important to not overwater-- don’t water again until dry as above. • While you may not need to water as often and it can handle dry air, Snake Plant also will do well in humid conditions. Feeding information and General Care tips: • Snake Plant needs quick-draining potting soil with a granular slow-release fertilizer refreshed every spring for the growing season. • Use a pot that is wider than it is tall to be sure this tall, narrow plant is stable. • New leaf growth comes from rhizomes below the soil surface. • The strong rhizomes and roots can break pots apart! Best location in home: • Anywhere that gets some bright indirect light and needs air purification. • Refreshes stale, closed-up rooms. • Also nice for bathrooms with their high humidity. Example of how to enjoy it: • The strong upright form of the Snake plant looks great on a pedestal or as a buffer next to a desk or bedside table. It may start small at 8” but can grow to 8 feet tall! • Snake plant is one of the most efficient plants at taking in toxins and releasing oxygen. Place it in a bedroom because it gives off oxygen at night. Refreshing! • Dogs and Cats should avoid this snake: chewing or ingestion can result in vomiting and diarrhea.
