Whatever your 'thing' is, why not give it a go by turning it into a fantastic fundraiser that will help change children’s lives throughout Northern Ireland? That’s the message from this year’s BBC Children in Need Appeal which takes places on Friday 16 November. Throughout the week leading up to the big night, BBC Radio Ulster will be looking at local projects which have benefited from funding from the Appeal, as well as chatting with fundraisers across Northern Ireland, culminating in the now annual ‘Hugo-thon’ hosted by Hugo Duncan live on his popular programme on Friday 16 November from 1.30pm-3pm. The on-air auction, now in its 13th year, will offer a wide range of items all up for grabs to the highest bidder. Barra Best and Jo Scott will be live from the Railway Gallery at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum at Cultra for this year’s local television programme. In London, stand-up comedian and presenter Rob Beckett is set to join Graham Norton, Tess Daly, Mel Giedroyc, Ade Adepitan, Rochelle and Marvin Humes in presenting BBC Children in Need’s 2018 Appeal show on BBC One. Broadcast live from the BBC’s Elstree studios on Friday 16 November, the night will feature an all-star line-up as they work together to help raise money for disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. One of the local highlights of the night will see 190 young singers from schools across Northern Ireland joining thousands of others from throughout the UK to form a choir taking part in a nationwide live performance of ‘A Million Dreams’. Joining in the chorus will be pupils from Macosquin Primary School (Derry-Londonderry); Clough Primary School (Antrim); Lisbellaw Primary School (Fermanagh); Omagh County Primary School (Tyrone); New-Bridge Integrated College (Down) and St Paul’s High School, Bessbrook (Armagh). Last year’s ‘on the night’ national total was £50.2m and in Northern Ireland it was £931,823. CC _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ MONDAY 12 NOVEMBER TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 46 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Air Ambulance And The Flying Doctors NEW Monday 12 November BBC One Northern Ireland, 9pm In July 2017, Northern Ireland’s Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), or air ambulance, finally took to the skies. With unprecedented access during the first weeks of operation, Air Ambulance and the Flying Doctors (BBC One Northern Ireland, Monday 12 November, 9pm), follows the HEMS team as they respond to emergency calls, ranging from road traffic accidents to farming incidents. With contributions from friends, colleagues and family – including his partner Janet Acheson – the programme also tells the remarkable and poignant story of Dr John Hinds, the doctor who campaigned so hard for an air ambulance in Northern Ireland. The documentary traces how John’s determined campaigning for the service grew from his experience as a motorcycle-mounted medic (or flying docs as they are known in the sport) at Irish road races. Having witnessed the benefits of delivering emergency, high-level care to injured riders, John believed that an air ambulance was the only way of extending such a service to the wider public. An accident at 2015’s North West 200 races, in which a spectator was seriously injured and the services of the Irish Coastguard helicopter were required, attracted the attention of the media and added momentum to the campaign. John’s tragic death two months later in an accident while working at the Skerries Road Races outside Dublin, added heart-breaking impetus. Eight months later, in March 2016, it was announced that funding would be made available for an air ambulance to operate as part of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, with the longstanding support of Air Ambulance Northern Ireland – the charity which continues to provide financial support. The following year, the service John and others had fought for, for so long, was launched. And after just over one year in service it has responded to more than 500 emergency calls. Featuring body-cam and on-board helicopter footage, the documentary also tells the stories of some of those patients who received emergency medical treatment from the air ambulance team during their first weeks in operation. They include Sean Attwood, from Newcastle, who suffered multiple serious injuries when his motorbike collided with a car. As Sean, who has now recovered, says in the programme, he owes his life to the air ambulance medical team. “There is no doubt in my mind that the air ambulance, on that day, saved me. The idea of bringing the emergency department to me in the middle of that road is unbelievable. “If that accident had of happened a month earlier, they would not have been there.” Jonathan Golden, of DoubleBand Films says: “We were privileged to have access to the air ambulance and its medics at the very start of their journey, and to be able to tell the poignant yet inspirational story of how Dr John Hinds helped realise the dream of creating a service for the people of Northern Ireland.” Air Ambulance and the Flying Doctors is a DoubleBand Films production for BBC Northern Ireland.
