PROJECT ”Lakepromo – Tools for Water Management and Restora- tion Processes” (2004 – 2007), is partly fi nanced by the European Union (Interreg IIIC Programme). MAIN OBJECTIVES • to promote international and multilevel cooperation in the fi eld of water management • to exchange experiences and know-how between diff er- ent regions, to pool the related practices and technology Lakepromo – tools for water management and • to increase public awareness and participation in lake restoration processes management processes http://lakepromo.savonia-amk.fi • to contribute to the objectives of the European Water Framework Directive: a good ecological and chemical status of all surface waters in Europe. 09/2004 – 09/2007. CENTRAL OUTPUTS • Country-specifi c information packages on lake / wetland management and restoration procedures • A Manual of Practical Tools contains experiences from 11 pilot areas (lakes, wetlands, coastal areas) • A survey on treatment of rural wastewaters in Fin- land, Hungary and the UK • Plan for continuity All the publications are freely available as pdf-form at the main website. THE PARTNERS The Municipal Federation of Savonia University of Applied Sciences, Finland Savonia University of Applied Sciences is a multidisci- plinary institution of higher and adult education, re- search and development activities in North Savo. One of its important roles is to develop the connections between authorities, education, research and business sectors to promote sustainable progress in North Savo. SYKE has produced brochures on initiating a restoration project, volunteer monitoring and food-web management to advise authorities, NGO´s, active citizens and stake- holders. It is also the cultural, educational and economic centre of eastern Finland. Kuopio is situated in the so called Finnish Lake District and one third (400 km2) of its area is covered by water. Its goal is to maintain biodiversity and the well-being of the environment by promoting overall environmental benefi t and sustainable development. Th e School of the Environment in particular has carried out successful Interreg collab- orations in the recent past and is actively involved in contributing to local and regional partnerships relating to environmental issues. Its main activities are in fi eld of hydro- biology and hydrochemistry, fundamental and applied research, including environmental monitoring, fi sh management, environment impact assessment, lake restoration and nature protection; research and train- ing. Th e limnological database includes material from about 730 small Estonian lakes. http://www.emu.ee/ Pilot area: Lake Võrtsjärve Local focus: participation of stakeholders, integrated planning, harmonization of national legislation, education, public awareness Contact: Lea Tuvikene, [email protected] Brandenburg University of Technology, Germany Th e Department of Water Protection of the BTU is the centre of limnology and eutrophication of lakes in Brandenburg. UBA has long term experience with lake restoration, particularly in estab- lishing targets for nutrients, algae and cyanobacteria, and monitoring response.
