In the United States, one third of women murdered each year are killed by an intimate partner. Less than 1/5 of victims reporting an injury from intimate partner violence sought medical treatment following the injury. Victims of intimate partner violence lost almost eight billion days of paid work because of violence perpetrated against them. Emotional abuse includes verbal abuse. Emotional abuse can be just as damaging as physical abuse— sometimes even more so. 35% of all women who are or have been married have experienced emotional abuse.
