This follows on from previous vegetation mapping of the main moorland areas (Penny Anderson Associates in prep.) which had initially been identified for potential SSSI status (Jepson et al 2007). Vegetation within areas of the West Pennine Moors moorland fringe identified by Natural England were surveyed in September and October 2013 and mapped according to the National Vegetation Classification (NVC, Rodwell 1991 et seq.). Two main areas of the West Pennine Moors moorland fringe were identified for survey. One area - subsequently referred to in this report as the 'Anglezarke zone' - lies at the western edge of the pSSSI and includes land immediately to the east of Anglezarke Reservoir. The other area - subsequently referred to as the 'Haslingden zone' - lies at the eastern edge of the pSSSI, just to the west of Haslingden town, and includes land at Jackson Height, Haslingden Grane and the Musbury Valley between Musbury Heights and Tor Hill. As far as possible, vegetation was sampled from a number of appropriately sized quadrats (see Rodwell 1991et seq.) throughout the identified regions. The data collected from these quadrats was used to assist in the assignment of NVC communities, to illustrate the floristic composition of each community and to demonstrate deviations from the ‘typical’ floristics of the published British Plant Communities tables Rodwell (1991 et seq.). In addition to NVC mapping, vegetation within the Anglezarke zone was also mapped according to its Phase 1 Habitat types (JNCC 2003), including boundary features. Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) habitats for both zones were also identified and assessed against Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) criteria (JNCC 2009). Boundaries between communities were mapped with the aid of a hand-held 12-channel Global Positioning System (GPS) and aerial photographs supplied by the Natural England. The resultant maps were digitised onto MapInfo GIS software. NVC communities found are shown in Maps 1 to 4; Phase 1 habitats for the Anglezarke zone only are shown in Maps 5 and 6; and Biodiversity Action Plan habitats are shown in Maps 7 to 10 - all at a scale of 1:10,000. The total extent of communities in hectares has been calculated using MapInfo software and is shown in Table 1.
