The 2011 FIVB Swatch World Tour is scheduled over a eight-month period starting in April in Brazil and ending in November in Thailand. The US$1 million FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Championships powered by Smart is the fourth of 12 double gender events on the 2011 FIVB Swatch World Tour calendar. The FIVB Swatch World Tour returns to Italy for the 17th time for men and 10th for women. This year’s world championships will be held at Parco del Foro Italico, site of the 1960 Rome Olympics. This will be the 17th men’s and 10th women’s FIVB event held in Italy. Last year’s Grand Slam in Rome was held at the same venue as this year. · The FIVB Swatch World Championships will start June 13 and conclude June 19. Men’s and Women’s Medal Matches · A total of 96 teams from 34 countries have been selected as the top 48 for each gender to compete in the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Championships (as of May 30, 2011), including Angola, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Mauritius, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the United States. Including the reserve teams, a total of 96 men’s and 77 women’s teams from 39 countries originally entered the event. · The 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Championships will be the 223rd women’s and 262nd men’s event on the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour (open, grand slam, Olympic and Goodwill). The first men’s FIVB Swatch World Tour event was played February 17-22, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first women’s FIVB Swatch World Tour event was played August 14-16, 1992 at Almeria, Spain. This will be the eighth FIVB Swatch World Championships presented under the current format. The previous championships were: Los Angeles (1997), Marseille, France (1999), Klagenfurt, Austria (2001), Rio de Janeiro (2003), Berlin (2005), Gstaad, Switzerland (2007) and Stavanger, Norway (2009).
