Build Your Own Success Story! FOREST OF MADHYA PRADESH As per the report (ISFR) MP has the largest forest cover in the country followed by Arunachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Forest Cover (Area-wise): Madhya Pradesh> Arunachal Pradesh> Chhattisgarh> Odisha> Maharashtra. Forest Cover (Percentage): Mizoram (85.4%)> Arunachal Pradesh (79.63%)> Meghalaya (76.33%) According to India State of Forest Report the recorded forest area of the state is 94,689 sq. km which is 30.72% of its geographical area. According to Indian state of forest Report (ISFR – 2019) the total forest cover in M.P. increased to 77,482.49 sq km which is 25.14% of the states geographical area. The forest area in MP is increased by 68.49 sq km. The first forest policy of Madhya Pradesh was made in 1952 and the second forest policy was made in 2005. Madhya Pradesh has a total of 925 forest villages of which 98 forest villages are deserted or located in national part and sanctuaries. MP is the first state to nationalise 100% of the forests. Among the districts, Balaghat has the densest forest cover, with 53.44 per cent of its area covered by forests. Ujjain (0.59 per cent) has the least forest cover among the districts In terms of forest canopy density classes: Very dense forest covers an area of 6676 sq km (2.17%) of the geograhical area. Moderately dense forest covers an area of 34, 341 sqkm (11.14% of geograhical area). Open forest covers an area of 36, 465 sq km (11.83% of geographical area) Madhya Pradesh has 0.06 sq km. (National Average 0.07) Per capita forest area. On basis of Geographical features: Geographically forest in Madhya Pradesh can be divided into 3 categories: A. Tropical Deciduous Forests: These forests grow in the areas receiving an annual average rainfall of 50 to 100 cm. They are found in Sagar, Jabalpur, Chhatarpur, Panna, Chhindwara, Damoh, Seoni, Betul and Hoshangabad districts. B. Tropical Semi Deciduous Forests: These forests grow in the areas under average rainfall between 100 to 150 cm. These forests are majorly found in the area of Sidhi, Mandla, Balaghat, Seoni, Umaria, Anuppur and Shahdol. C. Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests: These forests grow in the areas receiving the rainfall of 25 to 75 cm. These forests are found in Sheopur, Ratlam, Mandsaur, Tikamgarh, Datia, Gwalior,shivpuri and Nimar districts. 2. On Regional basis: On the basis of distribution and density, forests are divided into 3 categories: A. Madhya bharat belt: This belt consists of highland of Shivpuri which covers area between Morena to Shivpuri. Large no. of thorny trees covers this belt. B. Vindhya forest belt: This belt covers the kaimur ranges which are distributed from the north of Damoh to Sagar district. C. Satpuramaikal belt: This belt includes the SatpuraMaikal ranges, forest, plateau and hill areas of highlands of Baghelkhand. 3. ON ADMINISTRATIVE BASIS: A. Conserved\Protected forest: These forests are looked after by the government, but the local people are allowed to collect fuel-wood/timber. It is 32.48% of total state forests. B. Reserved forest: These forests are under the direct supervision of the government and no public entry is allowed for collection of timber or grazing of cattle. These forests contribute almost 65.36% of total forests. C. Unclassified forest: These forests are not categorized under any of the categories. In this type of forests there is no restriction on the cutting of trees and grazing of cattle. This forest covers only 2% of total forests. D. Classification of Forest Based On Types Of Trees Teak Forest: Found in Jabalpur, Hoshangabad, Betul, Sagar, Chhindwara, Jhabua, Dhar and Khandwa covering 17.8% of total forest area. Sal Forest: Main Sal regions in MP are Mandla, Balaghat, Umaria, Sidhi and Shahdol. With Sal forest amounting to 16.54% of total area. Provides footwears to Tendu-Leaf collectors free of cost. Vanaspati van five year plan Launched from Katni District for promoting the plantation of medicinal plants useful in health care of women and children. Dindayal Vananchal Sewa Inaugrated on : 20th Oct 2016 It aims at forest protection along with welfare of tribles of remote areas. Eco-Tourism Ropani (Plantation): Under the scheme, the main plantation areas being developed as Eco-Tourism Spots. The First Ropani developed is "Tapowan Ropani" (Gwalior). "Vanaspati Van" five year plan : This scheme was firstly launched in Katni district. Under the scheme medicinal plants are to be planted in various places. Sanjeevani Ayurveda: For the marketing of the medicinal plants, 22 sales centers named as "Sanjeevani Ayurveda" have been setup in Bhopal, Balaghat, Chhindwada, Katni, Seoni, Khanda, Narsinghpur, Satna, Maihar, Indore Panna, Gwalior, Amarkantak, Chhatarpur, Rewa and Seoni. "Forest Plus" – An International Forest development programme Launched in MP by USAID (UN Agency) in 2012. Programmed is implement in satpura National Park, and Hoshangabad and Harda forest division. MP State Bamboo Mission Setup on : 3rd July 2013 Objective: To execute the various schemes of National Bamboo Mission. Major Forest Produce Teak These forests are found on the maxium (19-36%) part of the state. Districts – Hoshangabad (Bori Valley), Jabalpur, Betul, Sagar, Chindwara and Mandla district. Use -Building and furniture construction. Saal It covers 4.15% area of the state. District – Mandla, Balaghat, Sidhi and Shahdol districts. Use- Railway sleeper (highest), vehicle building furniture, Bridge construction, Poles etc. Bamboo Districts- Balaghat, Betul, Jabalpur, Seoni, Manadla, Sagar and Bhopal Use- in making Paper, Basket and roofs. Catechu District Guna, Shyopur, Shivpuri, Jabalpur, Sagar, Damoh, Umaria, Hoshangabad etc. Use – Paint, Leather purification and Medicine. Harra District Chindwara, Jabalpur, Shyopur, Balaghat, Shahdol, Betul, Panna, Seoni, Mandla, Satna and Hoshangabad. Use - leather purification, link, Paint, Medicine and Food Items. Lac In MP, Lac is found from Palash, Ghond, Sofflower, Arhar trees. There is a Lac factory in Umaria. Major areas – Jabalpur, Seoni, Shahdol, Hoshangabad, Bhapal, Indore, Jhabua and Mandla etc. Bhilawa Bhilawa factory is in Chindwaral. Key Areas – Eastern District. Use – Ink, Paint, Medicine. Mahua It is mainly found in eastern districts. Fruit found from Mahua tree is used as Alcohol and Medicine. Wild Life Madhya Pradesh was the first State to enact the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 on 25th January 1973. As per the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, Madhya Pradesh State has notified 11 National Parks and 25 Wildlife Sanctuaries, 3 biosphere reserve and 1 Ramsar wetland. The ten national parks and 25 wildlife sanctuaries in the state cover a total area of 6,117 sq km and are classified as protected forests. The State has 6 Tiger Reserves and they are the home to 526 tigers (as per the All India Tiger Assessment, 2019), making MP the Tiger State of India. The world's first white tiger safari has been set up at Mukundpur in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. This safari has been named after Maharaja Martand Singh Judev. The State animal of Madhya Pradesh - Hard Ground Barasingha is found exclusively in Kanha Tiger Reserve of the State. Kanha National Park:- Kanha has been the 1st Sanctuary of MP (1933) and is the first National Park (1955) and first Tiger Project (1974) of MP. Location : Mandla and Balaghat district. Area : 940 KM2 (The biggest NP of MP). Barahsingha (Stagdeer), Wild Deer, Chinkara, Various Species of birds, found in the park. Hard Ground Barahsingha are exclusively found in the park. Stagdear (Hard Ground Barahsingha) is called as the Jemes and Kanha. Banjar, Suparna, Hallon : These three rivers are flowing through the Kanha National Park. Pench National Park:- It is also called Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Park. Location Seoni- Chindwara districts and parts of Maharashtra. Area - 293 sq km. Declared as tiger project in 1992. The Pench River flows through this sanctuary. It has a large number of black dears.
