Status Report of Vitis germplasm in BOSNIA and HERZEGOVINA (BaH) 1. Importance of the Viticulture in the country Estimates are that 3500 hectares in BaH were under viticulture in 2011. Mostly are cultivars for production of wine and 260 hectares i.e. 7,42%, table grapes. There is no raisins production. 2. Collections or germplasm banks for Vitis There are not official collections in the country. Faculty of Agriculture and Food Technology University of Mostar in cooperation with Federal Agromediterranean Institute Mostar established experimental collection with main varieties of Herzegovina: Žilavka (white berries) and Blatina (red berries) with accompanied varieties and some unknown one. Also Faculty of Agriculture University of Banja Luka is in the process of establishing field collection with main cultivars of BaH. 3. Status of characterization of the collections Collections were not registered, plants were planted, and morphological characteristics were partly followed on some plants. 4. References of germplasm collections or databases in internet None. 5. Main varieties in the country Žilavka (white) and Blatina (red) are the main wine grape varieties in BaH. These are domestic varieties. Other varieties of importance: Vranac, Alicante Bouschet, Smederevka, Cabernet Sauvignon. 6. Table grapes Table grapes have less relevance today in relation to wine cultivars. It is estimated that 7,42% of total areas is under table grapes. The most popular cultivars are: Victoria, Black Magic, Matilda, Demir kapija, Cardinal, Afus Ali and Muscat Hamburg. 7. Selection or breeding programmes in course There are no selection or breeding programmes now in the country. 8. Clonal selection status Clonal selection only has started at the Federal Agromedietranean Institute Mostar, there are no official reports on that yet. 9. Catalogue or reliable publication with a list of the confirmed synonymies -- 10. Number (or list) of endangered cultivars Unknown. 1 11. Main international varieties cultivated Wine: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Alicante Bouschet. Table grapes: Victoria, Black Magic, Matilda, Cardinal and Afus Ali. 12. Main rootstocks used Vitis berlandieri x Vitis riparia Kober 5 BB Vitis berlandieri x Vitis rupestris Paulsen 1103 Vitis berlandieri x Vitis rupestris Richter 110 Vitis riparia x Vitis berlandieri 161-49 Couderc Chasselas (Vitis vinifera) x Vitis berlandieri 41 B Vitis berlandieri x Vitis rupestris 140 Ruggeri. 13. Use of microsatellites in characterization Microsatellites: VVS2 (Thomas and Scott, 1993); VVMD5, VVMD7, VVMD25, VVMD27, VVMD28, VVMD32 (Bowers et al., 1999), VrZAG-62 and VrZAG-79 (Sefc et al., 1999) were used for the purposes of some research work for the genetic similarities analysis. 14. Sanitary status of the propagated material Laboratories for viruses and bacteria analysis are established only recently in BaH, at the Faculty of Agriculture Banja Luka, Federal Agromediterranean Institute Mostar and Federal Agricultural Institute Sarajevo. Regulation for the production and marketing of wine grape propagated material is in preparation but still not in force. By that regulation analysis on the most important viruses (ArMV, GFLV, GLRaV-1, GLRaV3) is obligatory. Previously evaluation were made visually, also imported material must be accompanied with sanitary certificate. In the last two years analysis on the viruses at the authorised companies for production of planting material started. Problem with viruses is identified at the old and also at the new vineyards, and work on the selection of healthy grapevines has started. Program is run by Federal Agromediterranean Institute Mostar. 15. Main reference publications related to Vitis varieties or clones Bulić S. 1949. Dalmatinska ampelografija (Amphelography of Dalmatia). Poljoprivredni nakladni zavod, Zagreb. Kojić, A., Blesić, M., Bulić, P., Sefo, S., Lasić, V. 2007. Research on the autochtonous grape varieties in the Herzegovina region. Sarajevo. Radovi poljoprivredno prehrambenog fakulteta Univerziteta u Sarajevu br. 58/2 ; str.111. Maletić, E., Sefc, K. M., Steinkellner, H., Kontić Kontić, J. and Pejić, I. (1999) Genetic characterization of Croatian grapevine cultivars and detection of synonymous cultivars in neighboring regions Vitis 38 (2), 79- 83 (1999) Tomić, L., Štajner, N., Javornik, B., Leko, M., Mićić, N. 2008. Genetic characterization of the grapevine variety Žilavka (Vitis vinifera L.) with DNA markers. M.Sc. Thesis. Ljubljana, University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty. 16. Existence of old vineyards (or mixed plantings) Majority of vineyards are planted with autochthonous cultivars. Program of the establishing wine grape cadastre in Federation of BaH is in the process now. By the preliminary data ca. 16% vineyards are 40 and more years old, and ca 24% are between 30 and 40 years old. 2 17. Number/listing of minor cultivars Average area of vineyards in BaH is 0.24 ha, with the largest, of 0,5 ha, in the municipality of Mostar and the smallest in Posusje, 0.05 ha. With the exception of Žilavka and Blatina, together to some other varieties as Bena, Vranac, Smederevka, Trnjak, Menigivka, and the previously listed table grapes, the rest are minor cultivars. 18. Number/listing of neglected cultivars (present in repositories only) There are no data. 19. Is on farm evaluation and maintenance carried out? Evaluations on farm is not done. 20. Is particular attention paid to preservation of clones? No such programs for now. 21. Existence of national respectively regional programs/projects There is a Fruit and Vitis group at the SEEDNet South Eastern European network on plant genetic resources. Bosnia and Herzegovina become an ECPGR member in 2008, last year of the VII phase. Implementation of ECPGR activities are organized on the base of entity (Federation BaH and Republika Srpska) SEEDNet working groups. 3 .
