Fjällräven Classic Newsletter (Sep 2018) Fjällräven Classic Hong Kong is just around the corner. Here is some important information. And don’t forget to check out the Classic website (http://classic.fjallraven.com/hongkong/) for more information about the event. Packing List 45-65 liter backpack with rain cover* Light sleeping bag or sleeping bag liner* Sleeping mat Tent* Stove* with a deep pan – good for boiling water for the freeze dried meals Matches/lighter Dish cloth Small towel Bath towel Small knife with scissors or a multi-tool Toiletries Toilet paper in a plastic bag Head torch Sunglasses First aid kit* including dressings, plasters, tape, painkillers and disinfectant Trekking socks, preferably in thin wool or synthetic material A change of shoes or flip flops/sandals to give your feet a break Underwear in thin wool or in a synthetic material Sun hat/cap Rain/shell jacket. (Be aware that the heat and humidity in Hong Kong may affect the performance of your shell layers. And you could also overheat. We advise using an umbrella to stay dry and keep you cool.) Rain/shell trousers A light mid layer/vest Trekking trousers or shorts (You may want to use gaiters too, as you’ll be walking through tropical forest conditions at times.) T-shirt Trekking boots Trekking poles Swimming suit *Mandatory items Event Pack Collection You must check-in in order to be registered as a Classic Hong Kong trekker. Check-in is where you’ll receive an event pack*. *Event pack includes trash bag, filter bottle, gas (for outdoor stove), dried food (three lunch and two breakfasts) and six cereal bars. *Dinners during the trek will be provided along the way. The event pack collection date and place will be announced in October 2018. At the Start Address: Sai Sha Road barbeque area No.5, end of Maclehose Trail Section 3, Sai Kung, New Territories Address (in Chinese): 新界西貢麥理浩徑第三段,西沙路燒烤區 5 號場 Map: https://goo.gl/maps/RgM9mGgcCpB2 *If you’ve purchased the accommodation package, the bus transfer to the start is included By Public Bus Take KMB bus No.99 from Heng On, Ma On Shan to Sai Kung and drop off at Shui Long Wo (around 230m away from the start area). OR Take KMB bus No.299X from Sha Tin Central to Sai Kung and drop off at Shui Long Wo (around 230m away from the start area). OR Take KMB bus No.99 (to Heng On) or No. 299X (to Sha Tin) from Sai Kung and drop off at O Tau New Village (around 200m away from the start area). You must get your first stamp in your Hiking Pass here and get the safety flag that you will need to attach to your bag. The Route Kei Ling Ha-> Sham Chung Manor -> Hoi Ha-> Wan Tsai (camp1) -> Cheung Sheung -> Pak Tam Au -> Ham Tin (camp2) -> Sai Wan Village -> Yee Ting Campsite -> Po Leung Kuk Pak Tam Chung Holiday Camp (end) At the Finish Once you’ve made it, tired but happy, over the finish line in Po Leung Kuk Pak Tam Chung Holiday Camp, you’ll need to get your last stamp in your Hiking Pass. And it’s here you’ll also receive your Fjällräven Classic Hong Kong medal. You can enjoy the facilities in Po Leung Kuk Pak Tam Chung Holiday Camp subject to charge (exclude swimming pool is free of charge). How to get back to city? By Public Bus Take KMB bus No. 94 from Po Leung Kuk Pak Tam Chung Holiday Camp to Sai Kung. Transfer KMB bus No. 92 from Sai Kung to Diamond Hill or bus No.299X from Sai Kung to Sha Tin. Or By Public Light Bus (green) Take public light bus No. 9 from Po Leung Kuk Pak Tam Chung Holiday Camp to Sai Kung. Transfer public light bus No. 1A from Sai Kung to Choi Hung Or By Taxi (green) A taxi from Pak Tam Chung Po Leung Kuk Holiday Camp to the city district of Sai Kung. Special advice: “stay hydrated” during the Trek Fjällräven Classic Hong Kong will be held under tropical conditions. Warm temperatures and high levels of humidity makes it vital to stay hydrated. All participants will receive a filtered water bottle at registration. By using the filter in the bottle you will be able to utilize almost any watersource as drinking water. The filter takes away 99.8% of pathogens (viruses, bacteria, protozoa), particulates, chemicals and heavy metals. With the Grayl bottle you can take water from streams and creeks as well as tapwater in the public restrooms. Water point for the trek will be indicated in the trekking pass. Read more and see how it works www.thegrayl.com Additional information Besides, you can buy drinks and snacks with cash at restaurants or canteens along the way (marked on the map), so bring some money as none of them will accept card payments. You can also enjoy shower at Wan Tsai Campsite 1 (free of charge) and Ham Tin Campsite 2 (subject to charge). Important notice: Stoves and open fires are allowed only at designated BBQ and campsite areas (marked on map). Health & Safety Aside from having other trekkers around to help, all our checkpoints will have at least one trained first- aider. If you have any medical issues during the trek, contact the checkpoint staff. They should be able to help with most health issues. Special Arrangements for Bad Weather In case of Tropical Storm Warning Signal No. 8 (or above) or the Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is hoisted, Fjällräven Classic Hong Kong event will be cancelled and Fjällräven will refund the event fee but cannot be responsible for any additional expenses ( E.g.: additional hotel room booking) If you’ve purchased the accommodation package, please continue to read the followings: Accommodation Details 1. By Public Bus Take Citybus No. A29 from Hong Kong International Airport to Po Lam, Tseung Kwan O and alight at Diamond Hill, transfer KMB bus No. 92 from Diamond Hill to Sai Kung, transfer KMB bus No. 94 from Sai Kung to Wong Shek Pier and alight at Pak Tam Chung. 4. How to get to Po Leung Kuk Pak Tam Chung Holiday Camp from city? By Public Bus Take KMB bus No. 92 from Diamond Hill to Sai Kung or No. 299X from Sha Tin Central to Sai Kung, transfer KMB bus No. 94 from Sai Kung to Wong Shek Pier and alight at Pak Tam Chung. Or By Public Light Bus (green) Take public light bus No. 1A from Choi Hung to Sai Kung, then transfer public light bus No. 9 at Sai Kung and alight at Pak Tam Chung. Or By Taxi (green) A taxi from the city district of Sai Kung to the Po Leung Kuk Pak Tam Chung Holiday Camp. 5. After check in, dinner will be served at 6:00-6:40pm. If you are not able to catch up the service time, you can still buy food by using cash or Octopus card at canteen until 8pm. 6. The breakfast before the trek, you will receive the packable breakfast at 6:30am. 7. After the trek, Dinner BBQ will be located at BBQ area starting from 6:00pm. 8. The breakfast after the trek will be served at 8:00-8:30am. If you are not able to catch up the service time, you can still buy food by using cash or Octopus card at canteen. Important Notice: • The latest check in time is 8 pm. • The facilities are subject to charge (only the swimming pool is free of charge). • Storage will be provided, you will be able to leave your luggage in designated storage room before the trek and get it back after the trek. Please don’t leave any personal belongings in the bedroom. • Shuttle bus service will be provided and will take you to the starting point. (Service time to be confirm when you check in) .
