CAESAR MUST DIE (Cesare deve morire) a film by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani Italy, 2012 76 min. GOLDEN BEAR WINNER WINNER, ECUMENICAL PRIZE, Berlinale Each year the inmates of Rome’s high security Rebibbia prison, incarcerated mostly for Mafia- related crimes, put on a play. The Taviani brothers follow the rehearsals and performance of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, a play where the conspiracies and betrayals echo the past and present lives of the prisoners. The actors become prisoners once again as they are accompanied back to their cells. As one of the prisoner-turned-actor remarks towards the end of the film: “Since I discovered art, this cell has become a prison” ‘The film’s mere 76 minutes are more resonant than many far longer films, thanks to the way the Tavianis explore the complex relationship between life and art... a witty cautionary tale of failed idealism, revolutionary communal action, endless cyclical Utopianism and the value and concomitant cost of a commitment to art... humane, intelligent and affecting.’ Geoff Andrew, Time Out London ‘Now into their eighties, the Taviani brothers show with this remarkable, fresh and moving drama- documentary they have lost none of that mix of observational rigour and sympathy for the underdog that marked early films like Padre Padrone, their 1977 Palme d’Or winner.’ Lee Marshall, Screen CREW CAST Directors and script Paolo and Vittorio Taviani Cassio Cosimo Rega Camera Simone Zampagni Bruto Salvatore Striano Editing Roberto Perpignani Cesare Giovanni Arcuri Sound Benito Alchimede, Brando Mosca Marcantonio Antonio Frasca Music Giuliano Taviani, Carmelo Travia Decio Juan Dario Bonetti Casting Fabio Cavalli Lucio Vincenzo Gallo Producer Grazia Volpi Metello Rosario Majorana Executive Producer Donatella Palermo Trebonio Francesco De Masi Co-Producers Donatella Palermo, Cinna Gennaro Solito Agnese Fontana, Laura Andreini Salerno, Casca Vittorio Parrella Cecilia Valmarana Legionär Pasquale Crapetti A Kaos Cinematografica production, in association Wahrsager Francesco Carusone with Stemal Entertainment srl, Le Talee, La Ribalta – Stratone Fabio Rizzuto Centro Studi E.
