The Curate For those seeking to be received or confirmed in Notes for The Episcopal Church, the ministry classes will begin this Sunday, May 5th after and life of Immanuel parish 10am Liturgy. An alternate time for those who cannot attend Sunday morning, will be offered as individual scheduling needs are made known. Curate for the weeks of May 5th & 12th, 2013 THANK YOU, ROSS CHOIR! Next Sunday, May 12, the Ross Choir will sing for the 10 am Eucharist. This will be their final appearance of the season. Please take an opportunity when you see them to thank these young members of Immanuel’s community for their faithful commitment and sharing of their time and abilities to enrich our worship! This year’s Ross Choristers are: Emma Barczak, Lauren Barczak, Maggie Behringer (Head Chorister), Emily Ciuffetelli, Tommy Kinservik, Teddy Kinservik, Katya Linton, Charlotte Brownell, Lydia Brownell. The Ross Choir is always eager to welcome new members. If you know (or know of) a young person age 8 or older who likes to sing, and who would benefit from the training, education and experience which membership in the Ross Choir offers, please let Jack Burnam know. Call the office, 328-2413, or contact Jack directly at <[email protected]>. JUNE 9TH CONFIRMATION AND RECEPTION INTO THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH/ANGLICAN COMMUNION. It is the teaching of our Episcopal Church that all baptized persons should, at an appropriate age and with preparation, make a mature, public affirmation of Christian faith and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation as administered by a Bishop. It is also provided that those baptized persons who have already received the Sacrament of Confirmation while members of another Church sharing the apostolic ministry of Bishops (usually this refers to those Confirmed within the Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox traditions) should, when desiring to be Received as a Communicant Member of the Episcopal Church, be presented to a Bishop in the Rite of Reception. The Bishop of the Diocese of Delaware, the Rt. Rev. Wayne Wright., will visit Immanuel on the Green on Sunday morning, June 9th, to be our Celebrant and Preacher, and, at the 10 a.m. service, to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation and the Rite of Reception into the Episcopal Church. For the four Sundays of May, following the 10 a.m. Holy Eucharist, the rector will be offering a preparatory class for those who would like to be Confirmed or Received into the Episcopal Church/Anglican Communion. This class may be of interest to those “old timers” as well, who would enjoy a refresher. For those not able to attend Sunday morning classes, alternative times will be scheduled. The Bishop’s Visitation is always a very wonderful and special time at Immanuel. If you or a member of your family would like to participate in Confirmation or Reception this year, please contact the Church Office, 302-328-2413, or by e-mail, [email protected] , or speak to the rector with any questions, and to indicate interest in attendance. ASCENSION DAY SERVICE, MAY 9TH. The Feast of the Ascension is one of the seven Principal Feast Days observed in the Episcopal Church (BCP p.15). This Feast always falls on a Thursday forty days after Easter Day. On Ascension Day we commemorate the end of our Lord’s earthly life and his ascending, or “going up” to heaven to be seated at the right hand of the Father. The Prayer Book directs that the Eucharist is to celebrated on all major Feasts and so to mark this special day, the Holy Eucharist will be offered on May 9th at 7:30 PM with a reception in the Academy following. The Mixed Choir will sing a festive setting of the Communion Service, “Missa Resurrections” by Gerre Hancock, based on the hymn tune St. Magnus (“The head that once was crowned with thorns”). Dr. Hancock was the longtime Choirmaster and Organist of St. Thomas Church, NYC, in which parish Fr. Keene served for three years as a seminarian. Please come and join us on this special day! ASCENSION RECEPTION: AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OUTREACH AND FELLOWSHIP. Following the Ascension Day liturgy, Capriotti sandwiches, wine and sparkling cider. will be offered at the reception in the Academy. If you are able to contribute side dishes and desserts, please call the Parish Office at 328-2413 between 9 AM and 2 PM., Monday through Friday. This is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with fellow parishioners and visitors and build community here at Immanuel. Please join us! FREE BOOKSHELVES If you have been in the church offices lately, you know that we are in the process of cleaning up and cleaning out. We have two sturdy bookcases that are taking up too much space. They are each 7 feet high, 11 inches deep and 42 inches wide. If you are interested in taking these bookcases off our hands, please call the office 302-328-2413. CHORAL EVENSONG FOR A DAY IN OLD NEW CASTLE. In May, Immanuel’s regular monthly Choral Evensong moves to the third Saturday of the month, to be part of A Day in Old New Castle. This year Immanuel’s highly-regarded Mixed Choir will sing classic English choral music by Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Tallis, Edward Bairstow and William Smith of Durham. Then, immediately following Evensong, members of the Immanuel Bach Consort, soprano Dawn Murphy Proctor and organist Gary Harney, will perform J. S. Bach’s solo Cantata #84, Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Glücke (“I am content with my fortune”). This lovely 13-minute work, one of Bach’s later compositions in this genre, displays the maturity of a composer thoroughly at home in the medium. The subject is a favorite one in Bach’s cantatas: worldly treasure. In this work the believer is encouraged to be satisfied with what he has, and to take comfort in the realization that God knows what is best. We hope you will join us, to worship together, enjoy wonderful music, and offer a friendly welcome to our visitors to Old New Castle.
