Renowned for its world class engineering research, talented faculty, and promising students, NCKU has been one of the drivers of Taiwan’s economic miracle. In addition, NCKU’s Chinese Language Center, which is also ranked the second largest among all Chinese languages centers of national universities, provides rigorous language and cultural training to visiting scholars and students of all ages and abilities. National Cheng Kung University – Chinese Language Center (NCKU CLC) In 1982, National Cheng Kung University established the Chinese Language Center offering a complete Chinese language training program to promote international cultural exchange. The CLC is the second largest among all national universities in Taiwan. Each year, more than 1,000 foreign students from over 50 different countries study Mandarin Chinese at the language Center. The students are of all ages ranging from early teens to retired seniors. Design of the courses- Course contents: Language and Small Group Classes: A. The first week (tailor-made classes for Auckland students): - 3 hours per day. 2 hours for small group language class, 1 hour for small group tutorial class. - Small group language classes 5 days a week, 4 to 8 4 NCKU CLC 20180413 people every class. - Students will be divided into 2 to 3 classes according to their placement test scores. - Taught by professional and experienced teachers of Chinese as a Second Language (CSL). - Main textbook: A Course in Contemporary Chinese - Hanyu pinyin Romanization and traditional characters are used as the principal written codes of instruction. However, the course can be taught using simplified characters if students prefer. -Small group tutorial classes are designed to co-ordinate with class content, and help students to solve language problems they have encountered both in and out of class. B. The last three weeks (class with regular students) : - 2 hours per day, 5 days a week. Every class has 6 to 10 people. - Student placement into one of nine (9) levels ranging from no Chinese language skills to advanced skills according to their placement test scores in the first week. - Regular students come from over 50 countries. - Taught by professional and experienced teachers of CSL. - Main textbook: A Course in Contemporary Chinese - Huayu pinyin Romanization and traditional characters are used as the principal written codes of instruction. - 5 hours elective classes per week. Elective classes are offered in language subjects, including writing, plays, essays, Chinese songs, novels, selected Chinese literature reading, news reading, and business Chinese, etc. Cultural Courses and Activities - 3 sessions in total program, 2 or 3 hours per session. - Cultural Classes offered include Chinese Painting, Tea Ceremony(茶道)and Stamp Engraving(篆刻), Chinese Cuisine(美食文化). Cultural and Language Exchange - One-on-one language exchange with students of National Cheng Kung University. - Interactions with student associations of National Cheng Kung University. - Cultural Excursions - Friday afternoons - Taiwan Museum of Literature – oral introduction and tour of the exhibition - Tour of Tainan’s Historic Sites - Night Market 5 NCKU CLC 20180413 Local Weekend Host Families - Stay with local families for one weekend. Volunteer in local schools - Volunteer Teaching English in local Schools. Trips: - One day trip - Overnight trip (on request) Assessment: - 30% Final test, including oral and writing test. - 70% General performance, including 20% weekly tests, 20% homework, 20% class, participation, and 10% attendance. - Transcript and completion certificate will be awarded to students when the program ends. Extracurricular Activities: - Induction:Orientation and introduction to the center, tour of the campus and library, teacher-student tea party. - Farewell party 5. Detailed Fee structure (tuition, transportation, accommodation and meals) A. Tuition Fee: NTD 28,000 (approx. NZD 1,303) per person for a four-week course. This amount includes all textbooks and class activities, and it’s calculated on a minimum of fifteen students in the group. The minimum we are able to charge is for a group of fifteen, if there are less than fifteen students in the group, individual tuition will be raised accordingly. Fees are subject to yearly change, and there are discounts available for groups of twenty-seven (27) or more students.
