University of Florida Press 15 Northwest 15th Street Gainesville, FL 32611-2079 http://upress.ufl.edu Series Foreword The Panama Canal Museum, formerly located in Seminole, FL, closed in 2012 and transferred its col- lection to the George A. Smathers Libraries, greatly enhancing the University of Florida’s holdings on Panama and the Canal. The Museum’s mission was to document, interpret, preserve, and articulate the leadership role played by the United States in the history of the Panama Canal, with emphasis on the construction, operation, maintenance, and defense of the Canal and the contributions to its success by people of all nationalities. This mission continues to guide the preservation of the Panama Canal Mu- seum Collection. As such, the Smathers Libraries have reprinted this book, originally published by the Panama Canal Museum, in honor of the Museum’s history and that of the people who lived and worked in the Panama Canal Zone. The Panama Canal Museum Collection (PCMC) in the Department of Special & Area Studies Collec- tions at the George A. Smathers Libraries is the leading research collection in the United States for the study of the American era of the Panama Canal. The Collection documents the U.S. experience in the Panama Canal Zone and Panama, and to a lesser degree, it also preserves historical information about the Canal prior and subsequent to U.S. construction and operation. The Smathers Libraries preserve and provide access to the historically significant and distinctive ma- terials about Panama and the Canal in order to facilitate knowledge creation and dissemination and to support and advance the commitment of the Smathers Libraries to excellence in education and research and contribute to the University of Florida’s standing as a preeminent public research university.
