The plants of the family are collectively known as cucurbits. It is a distinct family without any close relatives. Plants of this family have many medicinal and nutritional benefits. So it is important to find out the active agents possessing pharmacological activity in plants coming under the family. The major elements present are the phytochemicals like Glycosides, Terpenoids, Saponins, Tannins, Steroids, Carotenoids, and Resins etc. and most commonly the terpenoid substance called Cucurbitacins Keywords: Cucurbita, Momordica, Cucumis, Citrullus, Trichosanthes, Cucurbitacins INTRODUCTION fact that they are rich source of proteins, with many Plants were used to cure diseases and infections during biological activities like anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti- ancient time. Medicinal plants are cheap, easily available viral, anti-diabetic, anti-tumor and anti-AIDS. It is also and affordable. The medicinal importance of plants lies in known to contain several bioactive compounds such as some chemical substances that produce a specific cucurbitacins, triterpenes, sterols and alkaloids5. The physiological action on the human body. The most present study is to review the pharmacologically essential of these bioactive constituents of plants are important plants and phytochemicals present in cucurbits alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids and phenolic and to understand their pharmacological activity. compounds1. Cucurbits form an important and a big group of vegetable crops cultivated extensively in the PHYTOCHEMICALS PRESENT IN CUCURBITS subtropical and tropical countries. All of the cultivated Phytochemicals are non nutritive chemical constituents of species are found in subfamily Cucurbitoideae. Fruit of plants which occur naturally in it, or the chemicals which Cucurbita maxima is the largest known fruit of all is derived from plants are called Phytochemicals1 flowering plants, and are often used in contests for the .Phytochemical analysis of the plants belongs to largest pumpkin category. Based on world production, the cucurbitaceae family confirms the presence of various most popular cucurbit is watermelon, followed by phytochemicals like tannins, cardiac glycosides, cucumber and the leading producers of cucurbits are terpenoides, carbohydrates, resins, saponins, Carotenoids China and Turkey2. The family consists of about 130 and phytosterols6. Glycosides play various important genera and 800 species. A lot of work has been done roles in living organisms. The first glycoside identified by the researchers throughout the world on various was Amygdalin in 1830. Cardiac glycosides are the type plants of the family Cucurbitaceae. The important of drugs which is mainly used in the treatment of heart genera belonging to the family are Trichosanthes, disease or cardiac disease. Their function is to increase Lagenaria, Luffa, Benincasa, Momordica, Cucumis, the cardiac output by increasing the force of contraction. Citrullus, Cucurbita, Bryonopsis and Corallocarpus. By increasing the intracellular calcium, the cardiac Some of the important plants that have been glycosides help to increase calcium-induced calcium extensively studied are Momordicacharantia, release and thus contraction1. Cardiac glycosides have Cucurbitapepo, Cucumissativus, Cucumismelo, anti-inflammatory activity, offer protection against lethal Citrulluscolocynthis, Luffaechinata, endotoxemia and are used in cardiac treatment of Trichosantheskirilowii, Lagenariasiceraria, congestive heart failure[6]. The leaves, seeds and bark of Benincasahispidaetc3. Cucurbit plants were used actively the plant Momordicabalsamina of cucurbitaceae family as traditional herbal remedies for various diseases. They contain cardiac glycosides1. The terpenoides, is have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antitumor, sometimes called as isoprenoids. These have large and hepatoprotective, cardiovascular and immunoregulatory different class of naturally occurring organic chemicals activities3, 4. In general, members of this family have which is similar to terpenes[1]. Terpenoides have always been considered as a subject of research due to the membrane disruption and inhibitory effect against fungi *Author for Correspondence Rajasree et.al. / Phytochemicals of Cucurbitaceae… and bacteria. It also has antineoplastic activity. These are enlarged prostate gland and micturition problems related widely found in Citrulluscolocynthis6. Saponins have to irritable bladder. The advantage of pumpkin seed haemolytic property, induced cytotoxic effect, expectorant treatment arises from its tonic influence on the bladder action, antitumor and anti-mutagenic activities and can and sphincter relaxation. The relaxations of the bladder lower the risk of human cancers, by preventing cancer and decrease in-bladder pressure are related to the cells from growing6. Saponins have the property of increased productions of NO via the arginine or NO precipitating and coagulating red blood and are used to Pathway. Cucurbitapepo treatment alleviates micturition stop bleeding and in treating wound.Hensleyagracilaria, symptoms but does not decrease the augmented volume a Chinese medicinal plant of this family contains of prostate gland. It possess Antioxidant activity saponins1. Tannins, sometimes called as tannoid, is a type (inhibitory activity against lipid peroxidation and of biomolecule, present in plant and is assigned by freeradical scavenging activity), Antiandrogenic activity, Phytochemical process1.Tannins have been found in the Immunological activity, Antiviral activity, Antifungal extracts of Cucumis sativa (Cucumber) and activity, Cardiovascular activity, Anti-inflammatory Praecitrullusfistulosus(Tinda). Tannins have astringent activity and Hepatoprotective activity7. Its seeds have properties; hasten the healing of wounds and inflamed shown immunosuppressive activity in peripheral mucous membrane. Tannins are potential metal ion mononuclear blood cells, the seed extracts modulate chelator, proton precipitating agent and biological immunobiochemical pathways induced by interferons. It antioxidant. Ellagitannins have free radical scavenging has antibacterial properties. Anti-ulcer and antioxidant activity6. Steroids have a special type of component activities are exhibited by tetracyclictriterpenoids called Sterol, Phytosterols have been found in the extracts (cucurbitacins) extracted from C. pepo seeds. Also cause of Momordicacharantia (Karela), Cucumis sativa inhibition to the testosterone induced hyperplasia of the (Cucumber), Lagenariasiceraria (Loki). Phytosterols prostate. The fruit is cooling and astringent to the bowels, have a significant hypocholesterolemic effect6. increases appetite, cures leprosy and purifies the blood. Carotenoids are more than 600 in nature and are found in Seeds cure sore chests, haemoptysis, bronchitis and two classes, xanthophylls (contain oxygen) and carotenes fever3, 4. (which having purely hydrocarbons, and no oxygen). Cucurbita maxima (pumpkin) Carotenoids can be found in watermelon The plant Cucurbitamaxima Duchesne (commonly (Citrulluslanatus)1. Resins were found in all seed extracts known as pumpkin) is widely cultivated throughout the except Cucumis sativa (Cucumber) and found in world for use as vegetable as well as medicine. Both Momordicabalsamina 1. fruits and the aerial parts are commonly consumed as vegetable8. The flowers of Cucurbita maxima Duchesne GENUS CUCURBITA afforded a 4:1 mixture of spinasterol and 24-ethyl-5α- The genus Cucurbita, indigenous to the western cholesta-7, 22, 25-trien-3β-ol9,10.
