Brigham Young University Ballroom Dance Camp July 31–August 4, 2017 General Information Dear Dancer, We are pleased that you will be a participant in the 2017 Ballroom Dance Camp at Brigham Young University. It will be our pleasure to host you on BYU campus for this dance camp experience. We hope the following information will assist in your preparation. Sincerely, Lee and Linda Wakefield Check-in Times Main Camp Check-In: 4:00–6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 30 at the BYU Conference Center patio. Late Camp Check-In: Monday, July 31, starting at 7:30 a.m., and anytime thereafter, in the Wilkinson Student Center (WSC) main ballroom. Camp Ends: 11:00 p.m. on Friday, August 4, 2017 Housing Check-Out: by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday Where to Come for Check-in Check-in will be held inside the BYU Conference Center foyer, (see BYU map: map.byu.edu). The Conference Center is currently under construction. Please see the conference center website for updated parking and entrance information, a map, and specific driving directions: conferencecenter.ce.byu.edu/driving_directions. Check-in will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 30. Registration packets and camp novelties will be distributed to all participants, as well as housing cards and Cougar Cash to those who purchased them. You may also purchase Cougar Cash at check-in if you would like. If you are going to stay in BYU on-campus housing you will go to the Cannon Center after you check in to pick up your room assignment and dorm key. If you have registered for Early Arrival in BYU Housing (after 7:00 p.m. Saturday), or if you arrive after 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, you can check in to your dorm room by going to the Cannon Center in Helaman Halls to pick up your key. It is open until midnight. You may call the Cannon Center anytime before midnight at (801) 422-2034. They have an on-call phone number on the door if you arrive after midnight. BYU Housing Maps are located here: http://www.byu.edu/oncampushousing/maps.shtml You will receive your camp packet and novelties Monday morning. We will be checking-in participants beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Monday in the Wilkinson Student Center (WSC) main ballroom, and anytime thereafter. Check-in Parking and Shuttles On Sunday, July 30, you may park in the southwest parking lot of the conference center and enter through the south doors (level one or level two), go down the second floor hall, and go outside to the east patio. A camp-specific map will be posted on the website and emailed to you at a later date. Check-in is held in the foyer of the building. Signs will be posted. Continuous shuttle service will be provided during check-in, from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m., between the conference center and Cannon Center (at Helaman Halls, BYU’s on-campus housing). BYU shuttle services will NOT be offered to and from any hotels since BYU has discontinued its shuttle services. The hotels mentioned on the Adult Ballroom Dance Camp page provide shuttle services. The camp website is dancecamps.byu.edu Meals The BYU cafeteria (Cannon Center) is open 5:00–6:00 p.m. on Sunday. For those planning to eat at the cafeteria following check-in, please arrive near the beginning of check-in. There will not be any other places to purchase food that evening on BYU campus. All camp participants will participate in evening banquets on Wednesday and Friday. Cougar Cash For those who choose to purchase a meal card, you will be given a nonrefundable $85 balance card to pay for your meals. The cards are valid at any campus dining location, including the cafeteria, Cougareat food court, and BYU Creamery stores. A list of BYU dining locations and hours of operation will be provided at the time of check-in. This card will expire at the end of Camp. Travel Helps Non-BYU shuttle service is available between the Salt Lake International Airport and BYU. You can make reservations by calling Express Shuttle at 1-800-397-0773 or visiting expressshuttleutah.com/. Cost for the services is not covered in the camp tuition, but is the responsibility of the participant. If traveling from the airport directly to the BYU dorms, Express Shuttle offers a small discount. Orientation Orientation will be at 8:45 a.m. on Monday in the WSC main ballroom. During orientation there will be a demonstration of the different dance levels. Please plan to attend so you can determine your preferred instruction level. Evening Activities Monday: Classes (regular dance attire) Tuesday: Camp dance and social (regular dance attire) Wednesday: Banquet in the WSC main ballroom (dressy casual attire) *Thursday: Free time to practice for your Friday showcase performance (regular dance attire) Friday: Closing banquet, student showcase, and professional showcase in the WSC main ballroom (evening attire) *Sundance Mountain Resort: We will provide shuttle service on Thursday evening to Sundance Mountain Resort. This is available on a first-come-first-serve basis. You may sign up for a shuttle ride at Check-in. You can eat dinner in the restaurants, browse the shops, ride the chair lift, &/or attend the outdoor theatre to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. We will provide late shuttles home after the play. You are responsible to arrange your own entertainment. Andre and Natalie Paramonov – World Professional South American Show Dance champions; five-time undefeated Canadian National Professional Latin American champions; Asia–Pacific Professional Latin American champions. David and Natalie Schulz – Professional Smooth Champions Igor and Irina Suvorov – Former Russian Amateur Latin, Ballroom, and 10-Dance champions; U.S. National Professional Ballroom runners-up; U.S. representative to the World Professional Ballroom Championships; British Open Professional Rising Star Standard champions. Jonathan Roberts – Former U.S. Smooth champion and Dancing with the Stars celebrity. Dance Instruction Classes will be offered in up to five skill levels (beginning, intermediate I, intermediate II, advanced I, and advanced II). The purpose of presenting material in this manner is to assist those camp participants who need to gather material for routines of their own. Camp participants will also perform these routines at the closing showcase. Those camp participants who are not interested in learning a routine will still benefit from the abundance of material presented in these classes. Private Lessons Participants may request private lessons from the professional instructors of their choice. You must have a partner to assist you with your lesson or make arrangements with Linda Wakefield for a partner. Lessons are coordinated through Linda Wakefield at [email protected]. Please contact Linda only after you have received a confirmed spot in the camp. Slots are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to make arrangements early. The cost for private lessons is $110 per lesson per couple, which is nonrefundable after camp begins. Please do not include private lesson payments with your camp tuition. You will pay for the private lessons after you have scheduled the lessons with Linda. Please make payments to BYU by calling 801-422-8925 after your appointment has been scheduled with Linda. Clothing and Personal Needs Please keep in mind that you are coming to a dance camp and that proper footwear for dancing is of the utmost importance (we encourage flat dance shoes or dance practice shoes which are closed-toed, lace up, and have a Cuban heel). During instruction hours, women may wear dresses or slacks. Men may wear slacks or nice jeans. For the Wednesday banquet, the women will want to wear dressy casual attire and the men dress slacks and shirts. For the Friday night closing banquet, a party dress for women and dress pants with dress shirt and tie for men (coat is optional) would be appropriate.
