Burleson was born in Lawton, attended Cameron Junior College and served in the U.S. Army National Guard. His unit was called into active duty in 1940 during World War II. In 1942, he began aviation cadet training in the Army Air Corp and received his commission as a second lieutenant after completing pilot training at Pampa Army Air Field. As a 23-year-old, he commanded a B-24 in the Pacific Theater with targets in the Phil- ippines and Japan. Following World War II, Burleson piloted C-47 and C-54 aircraft in the Aleutian Islands and Newfoundland. In 1954, he was assigned to special air mission operations in Washing- ton, D.C. and later served as special air mis- sion officer in the Office of the Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Air Force, the Pentagon. While in that position his duties included coordinat- ing airlift support for the White House, the office of the Secretary of State, the Senate and the House of Representatives, and with other executive offices and providing airlift for both U.S. and foreign dignitaries. He also flew advance trips around the world to make arrangements for presidential missions.
