Sail Canada Athlete Selection System and Requirements Youth Sailing World Championships 2017 July 8-15 2017, Akko, ISR Athlete Eligibility • Age All prospective athletes shall be under the age of 19 years on 31 December 2017 (born after 31 December 1998) • Citizenship Unless otherwise approved by the IOC or World Sailing Executive, all prospective athletes shall be a national of Canada and present proof of nationality or approved exception. • ISAF Sailor All prospective athletes shall be register as an “ISAF Sailor” on the World Sailing website. • Sail Canada Membership All prospective athletes must be members in good standing of Sail Canada. Equipment Sail Canada qualification events to the Youth Worlds will be conducted with the equipment (sailboat classes) listed below. This list is subject to change if and only if World Sailing announces a different list of equipment for the Youth Worlds. • Boy’s One Person Dinghy – Laser Radial • Girl’s One Person Dinghy – Laser Radial • Boy’s Two Person Dinghy – I 420 • Girl’s Two Person Dinghy – I 420 • Boy’s Windsurfer – RS:X with 8.5 m sail & 60 cm fin • Girl’s Windsurfer – RS:X with 8.5 m sail & 60 cm fin • Boy’s Skiff – 29er • Girl’s Skiff – 29er • Open Multihull – Nacra 15 Sail Canada Qualification to the 2017 Youth Worlds Sail Canada’s High Performance Committee (HPC) will select one eligible athlete in each of the single-handed classes and one team of two eligible athletes for each of the double-handed classes to represent their country at the Youth Sailing World Championship 2017. • Laser Radial Boy’s and Girls: Qualification will be based on performance at the 2017 Laser Midwinters East – Clearwater, Florida – February 23-26, 2017. The highest finishing eligible athletes will be selected. • I 420 Boy’s and Girls: Qualification will be based on performance at the 2017 I 420 Midwinters – Miami, Florida – February 17-19, 2017. The highest finishing eligible athletes will be selected. • 29er Boy’s and Girls: Qualification will be based on performance at the 2017 29er Midwinters West – Coronado, CA – March 24-26, 2017. The highest finishing eligible athletes will be selected. • RS:X Boys and Girls and Nacra 15 Open: Selection will be completed by resume with consideration given to results at prior international and national level events and an accompanying training plan. • Nacra 15 Open: Athletes must have a demonstrated plan of how they will access, train and prepare for the transition/development of skills in this class. Note: For all classes selection to the 2017 Youth World Team will include an assessment from HPC in consultation with HP Staff of the athletes programs and performance leading up to and including the selection events and will only nominate a team/athlete that they assess as being at the appropriate stage and age of development to compete at the ISAF Youth Worlds. Substitutions: • In the case that the selected single-handed athletes are unable to compete for any reason including injury or illness, the next highest ranking athlete will be considered.* • For the double-handed classes, in the case that one of the athletes (either skipper or crew) is unable to compete at the Youth Worlds after selection, a substitute athlete may be approved by HPC. Athletes shall submit requests for team composition changes in writing to the HPC. The HPC reserves the right to disapprove the request and select the next highest ranking team.* * Where substitution occurs the HPC reserves the right to not select an athlete or team to send to the Youth Worlds. .
