[CLIENT] MottlPlatenik1604 NT1510146 29 July 2016 Research Highlights GOALS Research ancestors of Karl Motl (Charles Mottl) in the Czech Republic, starting with the information in the pedigree database and documents provided by the client. PROGRESS Found the index entry for Karel Motl’s birth and that of his siblings. Found the original birth entries for the three siblings born before 1881 (Rosalie, Ján and Ružena). Found the marriage of Karel’s parents (Josef Motl and Antonie Plateník). Found the birth record for Karel’s father Josef Motl and identified his parents as Ján/Josef Motl a.k.a. Mareš and Terezie Nová (a.k.a. Katerina Mareš). Found the birth records of Josef’s three siblings and his parents. Identified Josef/Ján Motl’s parents as Josef Motl a.k.a. Mareš and Kateřina Kralová. Identified the father of Kateřina Kralová as Josef Kral. Identified Terezie’s parents as Josef Novy and Maria Kusová. Identified the father of Maria Kusová as Ján Kusa. Found the birth records for Karel’s mother Antonie Plateníková and her two siblings. Confirmed her parents’ names as Tomáš Plateník and Rosalie Vladyka and found their marriage and christenings. Found the two previous marriages of Rosalie Vladyka and her eight other children. Identified the parents of Tomáš Plateník (Jakub Plateník and Anna Wacek). Identified the parents of Anna Vacek as Anton Vacek and Maria Krupka. Identified the parents of Rosalie Vladyka as František Vladyk and Anna Šoumarová. Identified the parents of Anna Šoumarová as Johann Šoumar and Dorothea Všetečka, and her maternal grandmother as Anna Plateníková. RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Research the deaths of the direct-line ancestors found in the last research session. 2. Find siblings’ christenings for Ján Motl and Terezie Nová in Kraselov Parish in the Třebon Regional Archive. 3. Find the siblings of Tomáš Plateník and Rosalie Vladyka in Hoštice u Volyně Parish in the Třebon Regional Archive. 4. Find the marriages of their parents in their respective parishes and continue to extend the generations back to the beginning of the parish registers—1659 in Kraselov and 1683 in Hoštice u Volyně. 2 Research Report The objective of this research session was to extend the ancestry of Karel Motl (Charles Mottl) in the Czech Republic. The client provided a copy of his birth certificate, which stated that he was born in Zahorčice house number 3, and had been christened in the parish of Kraselov. It also recorded that his parents were Josef Motl, the son of Josef Motl and Kateřina Mareš, and Antonie, the daughter of Tomáš Pláteník and Rosalie Vlendyka. The records for the Kraselov parish are available online from the Třebon Regional Archive, but are not yet fully digitized due to privacy laws. The christenings are available from 1659 to 1881, and an index to the christenings extends until 1897. Since Karel was born on 27 October 1885, according to the birth certificate, his original birth record would not be available, but it would be listed in the index. When the index of christenings was searched, an entry for Karel was found, but it listed his birthdate a year earlier in 1884:1 Index entry for Karel Motl’s birth This entry also indicated that his place of birth was Zahorčice no. 3 and that it was recorded on page 247 of the register, which agreed with the birth certificate. Since this index recorded the house number of all births, and house numbers can be used as a unique 1 Třebon Regional Archive, Czech Republic, Catholic, Parish Church of Kraselov, Kraselov 16: index, 1784-1897, birth of Karel Motl, 27 October 1884, Zahorčis, image 113, http://digi.ceskearchivy.cz, accessed July 2016. Siblings of Karel Motl According to the client’s information, Karel had seven siblings: Rosalia, John, Rose, Vincent, Joseph, Mary and Antonie. Only one had an approximate birthdate—Mary was believed to have been born in April 1893. However, the index did not list a Marie or Maria Motl birth in 1893, and in fact, there were no Motl births recorded after Karel’s birth through the end of the index in 1897, suggesting that he was the youngest child. The one Maria Motlová in the index was checked in the christening records, but was the daughter of Tomás Motl, son of Ján Motl and Terezie Nová (Karel’s grandparents) and therefore a cousin to Karel.2 There were no entries for a Josef or an Antonie Motl. When the index was searched previous to Karel’s birth, there were six Motl births listed as occurring in Zahorčice no. 3: Rosalia (1874), Ján (1877), Ružena (1879), twins Antonin and Václav (1880), and Vincenz (1882).3 At first glance, some of these names seemed to fit the siblings from the client’s information: Ján is the Czech equivalent of John, Rosalie was the same, Ružena is Czech for Rose and Vincenz is Vincent. The other two names did not fit as neatly: there was a male Antonín versus a female Antonie, and Václav was not seen in the client’s records at all. In addition, three children were too close together to be born to the same mother: Ružena was born 3 October 1879 and Antonín and Václav were born 13 May 1880, only seven months apart. It would be necessary to find the original christenings in the register to confirm the parents of these children and resolve the discrepancies. 2 Třebon Regional Archive, Czech Republic, Catholic, Parish Church of Kraselov, Kraselov 7: Baptisms, 1856-1881, birth of Marie Motlová, 15 June 1871, Zahorčice, p. 311, http://digi.ceskearchivy.cz, accessed July 2016. 3 Třebon Regional Archive, Czech Republic, Catholic, Parish Church of Kraselov, Kraselov 16: index, 1784-1897, images 111-113, http://digi.ceskearchivy.cz, accessed July 2016. DOCUMENT 2a-c. 4 All of the siblings of Karel from the index were found in the birth records, with the exception of Vincenz, since he was born in 1882 and the digitized register ended in 1881. The original birth records for Antonín and Václav in 1880 showed that the house number in the index had been recorded incorrectly—they were actually born in house number 6 and were sons of Tomáš Motl—more cousins of Karel.4 The rest of the children, however, were actually siblings of Karel, and their birth records were translated below: Kraselov Roman Catholic Church, Baptisms 1856-1881, Page 3165 Born: 2 December 1874 Baptized: 3 Dec 1874 Child: Rosalie Motlová a.k.a. They also mentioned a number of different towns. The map below shows several of the towns mentioned, and represents the respective areas of the two parishes in which family members were found. On the left is Kraselov, the home parish of the Motl family, and the parish in which all of these children were christened. On the right is the parish of Hoštice u Volyně (which translates as “the Hoštice near the city of Volyně” in order to distinguish it from the other Hoštices in the area), the home parish of Karel’s mother, Antonie. 7 Třebon Regional Archive, Czech Republic, Catholic, Parish Church of Kraselov, Kraselov 7: Baptisms, 1856-1881, birth of Ružena Motl, 3 October 1879, p.
