The MIU Men’s Health Foundation has inspired thousands of men, with their families, to gather at the Detroit Zoo in support of the annual MIU Run for the Ribbon on Father’s Day. Now the MIU Men’s Health Foundation, with Premier Healthcare Partner Beaumont Health System, encourages men and their families to expand their activities in support of National Men’s Health Week (taking place June 13-19, 2016). On June 13, men, women and children who wish to support the men in their lives are asked to dress in blue, and men are encouraged to participate in a healthful activity, donate to their favorite men’s health charity and share about it on social media, using #BlueMonday2016 to tag the Blue Monday Facebook page in their posts, and turn their profile picture blue with Twibbon. The overall goal is for people to publicly take a moment to share wishes of a “Happy and Healthy Blue Monday” for the men in their lives. http://tellusdetroit.com/health/MIU-MenS-Health-Foundation-Calls-on-Men-and-Families%20to-Focus-on-MenS-Health-Week-061616.html Page 1 of 4 MIU Men’s Health Foundation Calls on Men and Families to Focus on Men’s Health Week 6/22/16, 4:10 PM New this year, the Foundation launched the Blue Monday Challenge. The Blue Monday Challenge is a fundraising competition on CrowdRise where charities supporting men’s health initiatives will compete to raise the most funds for their organization. The Challenge launches on May 23, 2016 and ends on Blue Monday. A total of $6,000 in cash grants and bonuses will awarded by MIU Men’s Health Foundation to charities raising the most money. Businesses, corporations and community organizations also are asked to embrace Blue Monday as part of their culture, joining employees together to support the cause. Corporate partners include GM, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Molina Health and Quicken Loans. These partners will be supporting Blue Monday by encouraging their staff to wear blue, organizing health activities and turning their buildings blue. “Blue Monday is a day to promote and kick-off Men's Health Week, enhance men's health engagement and encourage fathers to have health conversations with their sons sooner to begin a generational legacy toward health,” said Michael Lutz, M.D., president of the MIU Men’s Health Foundation. For more information about Blue Monday, visit www.BlueMondayMensHealth.org. Run for the Ribbon Gala, June 17 The Run for the Ribbon Gala will take place Friday, June 17, 2016, at The Sky Deck in Detroit, from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. for a “Night Under the Lights,” filled with 250 friends, fine wine and food, dancing and a silent auction. Guests will enjoy a strolling dinner, picturesque views of the Detroit skyline and entertainment from The Ben Sharkey Band and American Idol finalist, Jena Irene Asciutto. Tickets for the event are $179 each. Run for the Ribbon 5K, Father’s Day June 19 Men’s Health Week will culminate in the Eighth Annual MIU Run for the Ribbon on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19 at 8 a.m. at the Detroit Zoo in support of prostate cancer survivorship. Prostate cancer is the most common type of non-skin cancer found in American men, affecting one in seven, and is the second leading cause of cancer death for men, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). The ACS estimates nearly 181,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2016. While more than 26,000 men will lose their fight with this disease, it is estimated nearly 3 million men are prostate cancer survivors, either diagnosed and treated or living with the disease. The mission of Run for the Ribbon is to promote the awareness, education, research and treatment of prostate cancer and men’s health related issues. The race attracts more than 2,000 survivors and supporters to run or walk each year. Registrants are encouraged to build a team or personal fundraising page when they sign up for the event. Registrants can upload photos, a personal story and set up team or personal fundraising goals. Each secure team page or personal page will have its own customized URL. Survivors can join the Prostate Cancer Survivor Team and raise funds in honor of all the men who are winning or have won the battle against prostate cancer. “Prostate cancer affects more than just the man who is diagnosed. His family and friends also feel the effects as they share in the worry and concern, as well as the vigilance and relief when he joins the ‘survivors club,’” said Lutz. “This run is as much for supporters as it is for http://tellusdetroit.com/health/MIU-MenS-Health-Foundation-Calls-on-Men-and-Families%20to-Focus-on-MenS-Health-Week-061616.html Page 2 of 4 MIU Men’s Health Foundation Calls on Men and Families to Focus on Men’s Health Week 6/22/16, 4:10 PM survivors, so we encourage all our walkers and runners to bring a whole team of supporters.” MIU Run for the Ribbon has been endorsed by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports as a quality physical activity event that significantly contributes to the health and well-being of Michigan residents and is included in the Pure Michigan FITness Series endorsement program. The cost for early registration, by May 20, is $30 for adults and $20 for children. Registrations made from May 21 to June 17 are $35 for adults and $25 for children. Online registration at www.miurunfortheribbon.org is available until June 17, 2016. After June 17, participants must register on race day. Race day registration is $40 for adults and $30 for children. All participants will receive an official T-shirt, and commemorative medals will be awarded to all finishers, with special awards going to top finishers in several age categories. Team awards will be given to the team with the most members, the team that raises the most funds and the most creative team name. In honor of Father’s Day, the newest father also will receive an award. Participants with prostate cancer or who have survived prostate cancer will be given a special commemorative gift to celebrate their courage. Jody Trierweiler from the Beverly Hills Club will lead a warmup session beginning at 7:30 a.m. Registrants also can honor a loved one by placing his name on signage along the course with a $5 donation. All donations will be used to promote the awareness, education, treatment and research of prostate cancer and men’s health related issues.
