The City University London Law Society Caters Well for Its Members Who Have a Diverse Range of Interests

CITY UNIVERSITY LONDON LAW SOCIETY The City University London Law Society caters well for its members who have a diverse range of interests; be it the socials (including the Christmas boat party which has sold out in the last two years), epic cinema screenings, lively debates, mooting competitions, pro-bono/voluntary activities and excellent careers events. This year the law society is hoping to stage more sporting activities between its members and law society members in other Universities in response to widening interest. As law students ourselves we appreciate that reading law at university is not a walk in the park and so the City University London Law Society endeavours to support students in every aspect of their life as a law student. Most people seek advice from those closest to them and those who have been through similar experiences in their own lives as students. We therefore take very seriously the importance of hosting events where students can get to know one another. There will be a number of day and evening activities at the beginning of term, but also throughout the academic year, enabling new students to make and build upon lasting relationships. Without a doubt students get far more out of the society than they put in, and so we encourage them all to become involved. The law society works very hard to provide students with the type of events that they are interested in, we just ask that they make sure they come to events once they have signed up and to keep us constantly informed about the type of events that they wish to participate in. F.A.Q’s Do I have to be a law student to join? No. We welcome affiliation from undergraduates and post-graduates from across the University. Will there be careers events and careers guidance available to non-law students who want a career in the law? Yes. When will the annual committee election take place? In under a month’s time, during mid-October. Further details to follow nearer the time. On what basis will the committee members be elected? Members seeking to be elected will give short five minute speeches. Specific details on what the position entails will be shared closer to the time. What positions are available? Social Secretaries Master of the Moots Debating Representative Pro-bono/Volunteering Representative Editor Sports Representative Liason: Non-Law Rep *Subject to change When and where will the first social be? The first social will be just after fresher’s fortnight and the welcome event will enable students to find out more about the society and socialise with other students over drinks and food. Details of the venue and timing will be sent to you as soon as we can confirm this in the next few days. Does the society have a website? Yes, details of this will be out in the next couple of weeks. We also have a Facebook Group: search for City University London Law Society And a Twitter page: http://twitter.com/cullawsoc How can I contact the executive committee members in the meantime? Ross Agim, President: [email protected] David Phillips, Vice-President: [email protected] Busayo Yusuff, Treasurer: [email protected] Anita Oluyede, Secretary: [email protected] Dear Colleague, Firstly, I would like to welcome new students to City and I hope your time here will be a fruitful and successful one. I would also like to welcome back returning students and I hope you were successful with exams, vocational scheme and training contract applications. There are plenty of exciting new things that are happening this year for students at The City Law School – a team will enter the London Universities Mooting Shield for the first time this year. We will be distributing a questionnaire at the Welcome Event after Freshers’ Fortnight, with the aim of reaching all who wish to be involved with the society in the current academic year. The details of the venue and timing will be sent to you by e-mail once you have declared your interest on the contact details sheet. Please write down your e-mails clearly and leave a secondary email if possible. The questionnaire will form part of a wider effort to improve the Society’s communications with its’ membership and is designed to allow the Society’s officers to get a sense of how we can communicate better with you and to make sure we are getting the feedback from you that will help us arrange suitable events. We will give a preliminary report on the findings in the first 2010 Newsletter and will arrange further events to the ones that we have already arranged over the summer, that reflect the findings. Our Freshers’ Fayre stall will be manned by Vice-President, David Phillips and Treasurer, Busayo Yusuff who very kindly have taken the time to welcome you to the society, throughout the day, at the Freshers’ Fayre. We look forward to meeting you all and getting to know you better over the coming months! Yours collegially Ross Agim President, The City University London Law Society THE SOCIETY’S ACTIVITIES Our main areas of activity are as follows: Publications The Law Society will be publishing a termly magazine which will keep our members up to date about the events that have been going on in the society as well as exciting developments in the legal world. It will also include vital information for students in relation to career strategies. The magazine will also include tips from legal professionals on how to break into the legal profession. We also hope to include academic competitions where participants will receive prizes for writing interesting legal articles on a topic of their choice. Vocational Events The society has already confirmed Open Days with two of the world’s leading magic-circle law firms; Clifford Chance and Allen & Overy. We are very close to confirming two more similar events with other prestigious law firms. We are always working hard to diversify the law firms that we hold events with and will keep you updated throughout the year once we can confirm the dates for these events. Social Events Over the last couple of years the Christmas Boat Party on the River Thames has been a sellout. Last year it was sponsored by Allen and Overy and is sure not to disappoint this year. This year we will be kicking off proceedings with a Welcome Event straight after Fresher’s. We will be hosting a range of social events in the Law School Common Room and the Ten2. We will also be organising theatre trips and cinema trips for those that are interested. To get your minds thinking about the law beyond the textbooks we will also be hosting big screenings of major recent films that are related to the law. We are also considering following up our flagship Boat Party event with a Summer Ball depending on interest. Debating We will be running: * Debating tutorials * Internal debating competition * Plus many more to be confirmed Mooting: what is it? A moot is the argument of the legal issues raised by a hypothetical case which takes place in the imaginary setting of a court of law. We will be participating/running: * Mooting tutorials * Internal mooting for individual years This year we hope to put the society’s students on the map and help take them to an international mooting competition we hope you will let us know if you are interested. Pro bono: what is it? Voluntary work that will enable you to use some of your legal skills for the benefit of the wider community. Students work with external organisations to help provide legal services, research or training. This could be through charities, schools or law centres. It may range from working in a law clinic to do doing legal research or presenting on a legal topic to schoolchildren. Pro bono work should not be confused with work experience in a law firm, although there may be cases where the two overlap. There are many more opportunities to do other types of general volunteering this organised by the University Centre for Careers and Skills Development. Pastoral If you are a first year undergraduate and would like to be mentored by a fellow undergraduate who has progressed to their second or third year please drop Ben Butler (City University London Community Volunteering Projects Officer) an email at [email protected] Publications We will be publishing a termly magazine and fortnightly newsletter Journal Prizes We will be arranging academic competitions for students who write articles on legal issues Out and About London is one of the most famous cities in the world and you will be studying hard in it for the foreseeable future, don’t miss out on the opportunity to relax in it and experience it’s delights!
