He describes himself as both an academic and a practitioner and believes this crossover enriches his work in both fields. He has worked in and with museums and heritage sites for over thirty years. In that time exhibitions on which he has acted as interpreta- tion consultant have, between them, won every UK museum award, including the prestigious £100,000 Art Prize (on two occasions), as well as the Tourist Attraction of the Year Award. His debut book, The Engaging Museum (2005), is now in its eleventh reprint in English. His follow-up, Transforming Museums in the Twenty-First Century (2012), is catching up fast. Stephen W. Boyd is Professor of Tourism at Ulster University in Northern Ireland, UK. A geographer by training he has taught at Otago University in New Zealand, Staffordshire University in England, and the University of Western Ontario in Canada. He has extensively researched and published in many areas of tourism but is better known for his work in heritage tourism, tourism and national parks, dark and political tourism, and the relationship between tourism and world heritage sites. He recently co- authored the first definitive text on tourism and trails with Professor Dallen Timothy (Arizona State University), and his current research interests focus on community empowerment on islands, measuring tourism experi- ence on sections of the Silk Road, Henan Province, China, and contrasting this with the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland. His latest research examines the slow food movement in a book edited by Dallen Timothy on heritage cuisine. ix x CONTRIBUTORS Stephen is Visiting Research Professor at Luoyang Normal University in Henan Province, China. Ian Donnachie is Emeritus Professor in History at the Open University. An economist turned historian, biographer, and heritage practitioner, he has written extensively on Scottish themes (including many linked to Australian or US history), on British economic and social history, and on heritage issues including historic New Lanark. He has held academic posi- tions at the University of Strathclyde, Napier University in Edinburgh, Deakin University, and the University of Sydney. He was Academic Advisor for the BBC/Open University A History of Scotland series, and he cur- rently holds several positions at Dundee University, and at the International Management Institute, Lucerne, Switzerland, where he teaches and super- vises tourism, heritage, and related studies and research. He has been closely associated with the conservation and promotion of New Lanark, the industrial community made famous by Robert Owen as a locus of social reform and pioneering developments in both education and co- operation, and which was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. Kathryn Flynn is a senior lecturer at Swansea Business School at University of Wales, Trinity Saint David. Her main teaching duties are with the Business School’s undergraduate portfolio in tourism and events management. Her teaching specialisations relate to leisure operations, cul- tural heritage and arts, special events, and tourism management. She com- pleted her M.Phil in cultural regeneration and tourism and continues to undertake research in this area. Her key research interests are centred on the heritage and cultural industries, specifically industrial heritage tourism. Within this area, she has conducted extensive research into many of Wales’s regional industrial heritage attractions, and related organisations. Her professional experience includes working on European Union-funded projects and acting within an advisory capacity in the development of local tourism development projects. Paul Gilchrist is Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at the School of Environment and Technology, University of Brighton. He has written widely on the geographies of sport, leisure, and popular culture. He is co- editor of The Politics of Sport: Community, Mobility, Identity (2011) and Coastal Cultures: Liminality and Leisure (2014). His current research, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, investigates the CONTRIBUTORS xi cultural heritage of minor waterways and canals. Paul is founding conve- nor of the Political Studies Association’s Sport and Politics study group and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Leisure Studies Association. Glenn Hooper lectures in Tourism and Heritage at Glasgow Caledonian University, and has held academic appointments at St Mary’s University College Belfast, the University of Aberdeen, and the Open University. He has published widely in travel and tourism, has a developing interest in conservation and design, and is the co-founder of the international ‘Borders and Crossings’ conference series. Glenn has organised several international symposia and conferences relating to travel writing and the culture and history of tourism and is the author of Travel Writing and Ireland, 1760–1860 (Palgrave, 2005), and editor of Landscape and Empire, 1770–2000 (2005) and The Tourist’s Gaze: Travellers to Ireland, 1800–2000 (2001). David R. Howell lectures in Heritage Studies at Cardiff University and in Early Modern History at the University of Gloucestershire. His core research looks at the impacts of political devolution and indepen- dence movements on the museum and heritage sectors. His wider research interests include the decline of intangible cultural heritage in Wales and depictions of cultural institutions in graphic novels, while he also co- directs archaeological excavations
