Dr. Conor A. Maguire, a Co-opted Member of the Council, died on 26th September, 1971. The term of office of the Members of the Fourth Council having expired on 7th December, 1971, the Government re- appointed as Ordinary Members the same six persons who had served in that capacity on the previous Council, on the understanding that, in view of the pending reorganisation of the Council, the re-appointed Ordinary Members would submit their resignations, if requested to do so, before the expiration of their term of office in the normal course. The Co-opting Body, which consists of the Director and the Ordinary Members, co-opted to the Council the same four persons who were serving as Co-opted Members when the term of office of the previous Council expired. During the year ended on 3ist March, 1972, there were nine meetings of the Council and the main activities were as follows: THE VISUAL ARTS: Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, Design, Applied Arts (a) Modern Irish Painting Exhibition The Council's exhibition of fifty-six examples of modern Irish painting which had completed its tour of Finland, Sweden, Denmark, the German Federal Republic and Britain, was brought back to Dublin and shown in the Municipal Gallery of Modem Art from 7th to 27th April, 1971, where it was viewed by 6,617 persons. (b) Celtic Triangle Exhibition In co-operation with the Arts Councils of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales an exhibition of work by young Irish, Welsh and Scottish artists was shown during the preceding financial year in cities in Scotland and Wales, as well as in Belfast and Derry. It was brought to the Dublin Municipal Gallery in April, 1971 and was seen by 8,897 persons before it closed on 9th May. From there it was sent to the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery in Cork where it remained until 5th June. The young Irish painters represented in the exhibition were Robert Ballagh, Sean McSweeney, David Crone and Denis McBride. (c) Exhibition of Paintings from the Council's Collection An exhibition of paintings from the Council's Collection was shown at the Cork Arts Society Gallery, Lavitt's Quay, Cork, for a month in July-August, 1971. It consisted of sixteen paintings by Arthur Armstrong, Brian Bourke, Patrick Collins, Barrie Cooke, Gerard Dillon, Micheal Farrell, T. P. Flanagan, Cecil King, Louis Ie Brocquy, Norah McGuinness, Anne Madden, Colin Middleton, Joseph O'Connor, Nano Reid, Patrick Scott and Camille Souter. It was visited by approximately 2,000 persons. From Cork the exhibition moved to the City Library and Art Gallery, Pery Square, Limerick, where it was open to the public for a month in August-September, 1971. As the gallery in Limerick is somewhat larger than that in Cork, it was possible to add four paintings by Deborah Brown, Colin Harrison, Brian Henderson and Daniel O'Neill. There was an attendance in Limerick of about 1,700 people. (d) S.P.A.C.E. Studios, London, to Ireland for showing in Belfast and Dublin. S.P.A.C.E. (Space Provision, Artistic, Cultural and Educational) Ltd., is a non-profit making company which was formed in 1969 to provide artists with adequate studio space. They have now acquired in the London area several buildings which have been converted into studios. The exhibition was shown in the Municipal Gallery of Modem Art, Dublin, from 22nd July to 22nd August, 1971, and attracted an attendance of 10,514 persons. (e) Duais-Chiste an Uachtarain de hide The late Dubhglas de hide, Uachtaran na hEireann, endowed a fund for the annual award of the gold medal Duais- Bhonn an Uachtarain de hide. The fund is administered by An Chomhairle Ealaíon, and the award is made in respect of the best painting of an Irish historical subject shown at the annual An tOireachtas Art Exhibition, provided An Chomhairle is satisfied that an adequate standard has been attained. In order to stimulate further interest in competition for the medal, the Council give an additional prize £100 from their own funds.
